Got this noise thats just started up.

At all speeds, even when in neutral and dipped clutch. it sounds like its got some really nobbly tyres on it, but it aint.....

think it is in the final drives???? pretty sure its coming from rear.
had wheels off yeaterday and checked bearings. turned hubs and noise seemed to come from rear diff????

any ideas on replacing any of the rear diff assembly, parts costs, crown wheelss etc......???

Hi Johno
Sorry to hear of your problem , here is a tale of caution! I had a strange noise from the "front" of a series 3 and was told it was the front Diff ( all same symptoms as yours only from the opposite end ) I was not convinced as the noise , to me appeared to come from the drivers side and sounded like a wheel bearing to me . So I had the wheel bearing changed end result £ 80 bill and the same noise!!! So I gave up bit the bullet and had the front axle swopped for a known good one .... yes you guessed it the noise was still there ARGH! at this point ( Before I decided to barbeque it ) A good friend said "I think this noise is coming from the back" So we dropped the front prop and jacked up the rear and drove the car and there was the noise . Changed the rear axel ...noise gone !!
regards Harddrive

PS was so fed up by now sold car

simple things first. check the rear a-frame ball joint. a good candidate for favourite part to fail.

drain yer diff oils, refill with molyslip then top up with hypoid, this should quieten it if its not too worn ;)
