Had a chance to pull her apart. Gearbox needs replacing and although the clutch is working it needs doing too. VCU also needed doing because it's getting very tight when turning. I'll have to think carefully about whether or not it's worth fixing these issues. It's unfortunate because it's in tip top condition inside and out with fully leather heated seats and everything.

It's still worth fixing. A suitable gearbox is pretty cheap, if you go for a second hand unit. They're actually pretty robust, so failures aren't common.

If needs be, you can remove the rear propshafts until the VCU can be afforded. ;)

Compare fixing the current issues yer have and the reliability after, and miles yer would get out of it... with the unknown of a replacement. Has this one got good brakes and servicing to keep it going int good condition...

Hi all. Just an update. I still haven't got round to fixing the landy, it's sitting on my drive. Unfortunately I can't fit a new gearbox myself and the quote to fit it is not exactly encouraging me to get it done!

I have been questioning lately what to do with it and have looked into my issue a bit more. I knew there was a leak with the clutch slave cylinder in the car and was going to replace both master and slave cylinders. The clutch biting point was very small before it froze up and I did struggle to get it in 1st gear which is also a symptom.

What I'm wondering is, if the clutch cyclinder finally gave way when I was driving, is the gearbox still knackered? When I was driving there was a grinding noise and a burnt metal smell. Will fitting a new master/slave remedy the problem or has the damage already been done to the transmission?

I wouldn't think a knackered master or slave cylinder would cause a grinding noise or a burning metal smell. But if they are leaking, you need to change them anyway.
