Hi,

I have a question regarding rear driveshafts in the Defender.

I have a Defender 110 from ´96, with the Sailsbury rear axle with a differential that is in serious need of renovation.
I also have a Rover axle from a 2007 Defender, chassis 7A7446**
I am thinking of swapping the axles, at least while I am renovating the orignal, but there is a small discrepancy.
The Rover axle has the STC3124 flange, that does not fit my driveshaft.
So, is the STC4858 the way to go??

Do you mean prop shaft, not driveshaft? If so, you should be able to swap the drive flange to one that will work with your prop.

Are the ratios the same for both diffs?
 
You can buy a second hand good condition Salisbury axle, or get it reconditioned. I don't know about fitting a rover axle to the rear of a 110 so maybe someone with more knowledge can come along but i wouldn't be doing it
 
Rover axle isn't load rated for a 110.
Peeps still do it though and probably not an issue if you never carry or tow anything but if you had an accident and someone got hurt...
Insurance would find that as a reason not to pay out for sure.

Yes, I mean the propshaft. The ratio is the same on both diffs.
The question is if the STC4858 fits to my prop. Want to be sure before I order it, since there is so much hazzle to order from UK to Sweden, after Brexit.

Well, the Rover axle that I have, comes from a 110 Defender, but a newer model.

I will be renovating the Salisbury axle, including upgrade with a limited slip diff. But I would like to be able to drive the car, while I'm rebuilding the axle. And since I already have the Rover one, that comes from another 110, I would rather not buy one more. Besides, used ones are not easy to come by here in Sweden, and the 2nd part stores charge you an arm and a leg for Landrover parts here.
 
Yes, you're probably right, I do vaguely recall Axles being standardized after a certain year. I would check spring seat diameters between the two axles incase that changed.

As you have both axles ;)

measure the heights from the axle face to the diff nose (where the prop mounts to.

will you also need to change the A frame knuckle joint ? Think these mount on to the axle differently between the 2 makes

Will measure it tomorrow. But the A frame joint, I did not think of that. Will also check that out.
