I have been sold a new driveshaft. However the vendor has sent one with the ABS ring. He says just to knock the abs ring off. Will this be ok ?

Personally I wouldn't be confident in the rest of the driveshaft as it's obviously the wrong one for car and would it be the right length, correct number of splines etc

I'd ask for the right spec one for your car

What age/engine/gearbox is your car? I got a new GKN driveshaft from carparts4less for about £150 from memory (2005 Td4 manual) and it's been great

The ABS ring is simply a (tight!) push fit onto the CV joint. It should come off without any hassle, but if you've not got ABS then I wouldn't go to the trouble - it shouldn't snag on anything.
I'd guess that demand for non-ABS driveshaft has been minimal for years and therefore aftermarket ones will be rare.

If its the same length and has the correct splines then try it. Fit it up and with the wheel on try turning it slowly by hand to make sure it's not catching, try it with the wheel at full positive and negative lock.

leave it on its std practice to supply cvs that cater for both non and abs vehicles so cv comes with reluctor ring

Cheers for the replies. My concern is that I do have abs, but I have only used driveshafts on my 04MY without the ring. I've no worries removing the ring, just as long as the abs will still work.

How does the ABS 'sense' the wheels losing traction (or locking up) on an '04? My '00 certainly has the rings on the CV and the ABS sensor sitting directly above in the hub. In fact a broken ring was what was causing the three amigos that were showing when I bough it!
I have, however, just fitted a cheap ABS driveshaft to our '99 model (without ABS!) without any problems.

They changed the sensors on later models. IIRC they are magnetic or something. The later sensors are blue where they join the loom under the bonnet instead of black. They don't work/fit with a reluctor ring on the driveshaft.

Interesting! There will be a continued demand for non-reluctor ring driveshafts as the intermediate models get scrapped then...
I'd still reckon the driveshaft will be fine - as long as there's whatever the magnetic sensor requires to function there. Rather than the ring being the issue, it's whatever else the later driveshafts use to trigger the sensor that's going to be important.
Does that mean that there are potentially three different Land Rover driveshafts for early non-ABS, earlier ABS and later ABS cars? Or possibly more if the automatics or Td4s are different side to side?

The later Freelander had the ABS reluctors inside the wheel bearings. On Freelanders before 2004 IIRC, the ABS used reluctor rings on the outer CV joints. As said, it's pretty normal for suppliers to send out the shafts with the reluctor ring fitted. It either used by the ABS system or not depending on the system fitted.

Hi i have same problem i got a new drive shaft an it has a sensor ring on it . i have a freelander mk1 1.8 2002 modle i dnt think it has got them on ? Could anybody help me .i have abs but dnt think it runs of sensor ring

This is an old thread! But, you have a later model K series FL1. Mine is an earlier model K series and I've just replaced a front drive shaft. There are two types. On the Rimmer Bro site there is part number TDB000360 which is for the FL1 up to VIN number 1A999999. It fits both 1.8 petrol & the L series diesel engined vehicles and it has the toothed ABS ring on it.

The later ones appear to use TDB000500 which is for vehicles with the VIN number 2A000001. Again it will fit the 1.8 K engined vehicles and the diesels too. I think the later vehicles like yours use a slightly modified wheel bearing too. It has a magnetic dodah on one face which I believe is for the ABS set-up.

There others driveshafts too but they are for the 2.5 V6 and the BMW engined diesels with the M47 engine.

Hope this helps.

As was just wondering the ring is on is it stopping in going in the hub properly as i left it on thinking was ment to be on as it sitting at bk off hub ?

Its a shame @RealBeale didn't come back with an outcome.

If you can send this shaft back for refund to get the correct TDB00050 part - then you don't want to go hacking off the ABS Ring to see if it fits.

Looking at it, the part number for the hub changed with the 2A cars, so it might not fit - but then it might have changed just to reposition the ABS pickup and the old shafts will fit!

Might need a bit more advice on this, I'm afraid I don't know.

Thnkyou so if take sensor ring of will it work as driver side not got one on

The only difference on PG1 shafts is the pre-2002 have rings and post 2002 don't as the rings were moved to the bearings.
On a slightly different note, only use genuine or OE shafts. In my experience cheap or aftermarket shafts cause vibration of the power unit.
