If your thinking about screwing the filler plug all the way in to the rear diff housing, then observe the following pictures, it may just save you hitting yourself over the head with a wrench.

Rear salisbury axle, note the plug has been ripped out by the diff, stripping the threads, also note the impacts on the pan, this will become clearer

Yep, the more observant of you will notice a little item, tucked back in the bottom of the diff.
Below :- Pan removed with plug, note the impacts on the pan, these are actually quite severe and have nearly breached the housing

So here endeth the lesson, don't do it.

PS: - My rear hubs have been seeping for a while, I'd like to replace the seals before I refill the diff, Can anyone advise on which hub oil seals to get for this axle, there seems to be so many variations on EBay.

Ooops! Oh well the cover plate was a bit rusty anyway ....

The cover plate actually wasn't that bad, its just covered in waxoil, managed to get a replacement from the scrappers of an old V8, done the job. Just waiting on info for my new hub seals and all should be well.

That the way to learn its called the school of hard knocks. Thanks for the pics, I just tighten them up and then give them one more for luck, Ill stop that then in case I have bad luck. Hope you get it back on the road soon.
 
Thats exactly what happened to my 110s rear diff :(....thanks for the info Otto...up until now i thought it was a freak stone hit!!
Happened to me in the middle of no where....so topped up with EP90 stuck in a piece of hard wood and duct tapped it...drove 50miles to get it fixed:)
Now i will immediately go and slightly loosen the front diffs plug.
