Hi, I just bought a 1989 Defender 90 which is in reasonable condion and I was thinking of getting it waxolyed. A local landrover independant garage said he would do it for £400 plusVAT. does that sound reasonable?

Depends on what they are doin.....they rubbing it all down and painting and then waxoiling or just spraying it on....if its the latter you could do it yourself for 50 quid

When you consider I paid 760 quid for a brand new galv chassis for me 110 then no, it doesn't sound very reasonable. Having said that it's a ****ty job and I wouldn't do it for a gold pig.

Try googling em there aren't many satisfied customers and the **** that runs the company is a 5star prick

Bloody hell thats a rip off, will he be wearing golden gloves whilst he's doing it? I know a garage that will steam clean and waxoil the entire under side of a vehicle for £60 cash, no questions asked. I can pass on their details if you like. They're in West Yorkshire mind ;)

This really depends if you like getting your hands (and everything else) dirty.

Sirus is quoting a sound price.

If you like diy and you have a power washer and compressor then it'll cost £50 - £75.

Wash the underneath ensuring that it is as clean as you can get it - use hot water if possible.

Check for rot - get welded if neccessary.

Think about painting the chassis with hammerite or similar - use a cheap (£20) tin of hammerite from fleabay.

Let it cure for a week.

Spray the waxoil with either old engine oil or thinners mixed at 2 waxoyl to 1 oil.

Remember to spray inside and outside of the chassis.

It's a very dirty job and time consuming but worth doing.

pos, where abouts is that as the brother in law can't afford the time to do it himself? Will they do a VW camper?

**** the bed, I bought a case of hamerite scholz with wax oil (12 cans)
3.26+vat each and some white spirit £60 total and without a ramp it took me a day cleaning and spraying it with a sholz gun so it's saturated and I've 5 cans left.

sounds excessive
