I was in the process of swapping my 2286 diesel for a 200tdi , I used the disco starter in the series 3 which worked fine until I did the engine swap , so didn’t sort the s3 starter , I suspect it was an end play problem
I did have some success by cleaning all th esolenoid connections and earths which helped for a while
