I think I have now reached termination velocity with my one hole and the fluid drain:(

Nothing is coming out now....im gona ave to buy a bearing puller to pull the bearing of so I can get the damper of so I can drill another hole to force the black tar out of my vcu..

I did a little test on the fluid that came out...and it seems that turps dissolves it:) only thing is I cant get any intothe vcu through my one hole.I pressume I need this other hole drilling..:)

why cant you get anything in through a single hole matey?

im interested in this project. might be interesting using 100% methanol as thinner as it will evaporate at 35 degrees celsius so very easy to get rid of. (please do this in a vented atmosphere if trying to avoid being killed to death)

That reminds me I bought 2 tins of thinners from lidl the other week, might try those......I cant get any in because of the pressure build up.....the air needs to escape somewhere....otherwise when I pull my syringe full of turps of the hole it flys back in my face lol!!!!

drill another hole, run a small hose from your filling fluid to that, and use syringe on the other side to apply negative pressure and suck it in. Bit like bleeding your brakes.

?

Use a ribena drinking straw on the end of the syringe with a bung to fill the gap. Straw should be thinner than the hole.

Will do.... im waiting for my bearing puller to arrive...need to drill another hole before I go any further. .:)

I will need the vodka when drilling the hole....I hate drilling metal...im **** at it....takes me forever and various drill bits...before im though. .

The drill bit needs lubrication as well as your throat! :D

Its probably the bits...Ive got loads in the garage some work some do not....I couldnt tell a good bit from crap one to be honest....The pound land ones you can bent 90 degrees without snapping I know that:)

They probably need sharpening...... any pointers on doing this, or ebay links to good metal drilling bits would be helpfull...

To be honest just some decent HSS ones that cost more than a £10. Avoid things like silverline etc.

Sharpening is something that is learnt to be honest. I am sure there will be some sort of guides on youtube or something (i cant get on youtube on this server unfortunately)
Itll take a few goes but once you get the hang of it is saves you loads of money as you wont have to keep replacing bits.

Ive got loads to sharpen at home because ive been really lazy. I recently bought a grinding stone with a guide that (supposedly) holds the drill bit at the correct angle but I have yet to try it out. If it works I will let you know and forward where I got it from. It could be utter tosh after all.

Where abouts are you? Id be really interested in getting involved in this. I love non newtonian fluid stuff. Really interesting mechanically.

Slow drill speeds are the way to go. I've got a pillar drill that has a slowest speed 80 rpm. This does the trick, regardless of metal being drilled. Good HSS drill bits are needed to avoid burning them out.

This stuff any good to ya jedi, it's on ebay and not a bad price. Dunno how much fluid is in the vcu

Yep ive seen that I may have to get some.....on another note...the black tar has started to flow again all on her own ...must be this warm weather..just opened the garage an the flow is on...:)
Still waiting for my bearing puller to arrive

I'm interested to see what comes of this, I have two duff units here I was going to exchange towards a recon unit but if I can fix then that's sweet

Well my bearing pullers came

A war took place.....and this lost..:)

Now im slowly gravity feeding turps/brush cleaner through it via a funnel...

The vcu is still stiff....but the black tar thats coming out is like glue...contact adhesive in fact....

Hi
How are going to tell how much silicon was in vcu if you are putting turps in.Won't the turps mix with the silicon to give a false reading or are you measuring the amount of turps you are putting in.

Im not measuring anything...the main job is to get this old fluid out...its really gelled up and sticky. ...I now know why they split them and clean the plates. ... my aim is to dilute/disove the old stuff and get it out...so I can hopefully turn the vcu by hand. ..I will worry about what amount and viscosity goes in when the time comes:)
