Hi guys,

Just a quickie: I measured by steering wheel last night, and it came up approx 41.5cm, meaning it falls between the medium and large sizes of Diskloks...

Disklok UK | Fitting Guide

Has anyone got a medium on this defender wheel below - or do I need a generous large?

Type B >> Web Rover

I see they put the defender in the large column, but there must be a nats whisker in it!?

Cheers
Tom

Large for me on a standard Defender wheel. The large will squeeze down a bit, but if you can't get the mechanism engaged on a smaller one it's not much use. As folks on here have remarked, a slightly loose fit is preferable as that way someone can't turn the wheel by turning the Discklok.

Hello Cat, this is Pigeons.

I use a medium, which I'd think would fit better. If you take the little bits of padding out of the rim it should fit quite well. A tighter fit is better than looser (ooh-er) so long as it still spins on the wheel.

Well after seeing images of one being removed, my biggest concern is keeping it on the rim to be honest, so I'll get a medium I think.

Thanks

Amazing, you ask for advice and 99% agree and tell you what is needed (must be a first for LandyZone) and you choose to ignore the advice and go with the 1% instead.

Also you are going against what DiskLok themselves say you need:

Up to you though I guess, but could be an expensive mistake

4 out of 5 said large - that's 80%

Now ask yourself, if the medium fits (and I have no reason to doubt the chap) could it not be conceivable the others (and no disrespect the them intended) followed the crowd?

Is it not also possible, Disklok got a diameter from LR, and said - 'yup I reckon the bigger one - that way we don't get people phoning up saying they're a tight fit'?

I have seen images of them removed, and trust me when I say that the tighter the fit the better!

I will also be adding the half-moons to the back, making it, in my humble opinion, at least twice as hard, if not, near impossible to remove with 'small tools'.

Your choice and money, but the fitting on my standard steering wheel is what I would expect, there is no way that it would be considered as being too big/loose. Mine by the way is the third generation Disklok3 - not sure if that makes a difference in the sizes?

+1 for what its worth:rolleyes::rolleyes:;);)

I don't know to be honest. It would be interesting to know whether there is a difference in diameter of the defender steering wheels seeing as DL only list one size for all.

Thanks - I appreciate it.

I was thinking more about the difference in the sizes of the DiskLok 1, 2 and 3 and who on here has which when responding to you?

I realised, but thought I could get away without confusion by mentioning the difference in wheels.

I wasn't aware the DL's had changed, other than in colour.

I have a 15 yr old yellow one, and a silver one bought less than 18 months ago, and besides the colour, I don't think I've noticed a difference to be honest. Not saying there isn't though...

Tom

EDIT: Just bought the column X-Eng lock as a start

I use a large (silver) Disklok on my 90. I can see the guy's concern here, to be fair.

The large is really quite slack on the wheel - too slack I reckon. It's a shame they don't manufacture something between the medium and large lock.

You can bond some low-friction material to the inside of the lock to reduce this slack a bit, but the best solution I have seen discussed is a large disklok with two half moons welded to the back.

Like I said, remove the foam inserts and it'll fit fine. I've just measured my wheel - it's 420mm across and the medium DL has three 'settings' that give you a fit between 415mm - 430mm approx.

BTW - "peeling" a DL off the wheel is the biggest weakness - the wheel is relatively soft and pliable, so if your DL is too loose it'll just pop right off. You can strengthen it by welding extra panels on the back to cover more of the wheel/spokes.

I avoided telling Joe Public that - even if it is obvious.

I would suggest you remove it quickly?

Tom

Not really, its very common knowledge. Landywatch has faqs on how to weld them up. A trust me, the scroats already know this too.
