I have a 95' Automatic TDi XS Discovery and it won't start! The battery seems ok cos' the lights are really bright & everything else seems to work ok. The relay assembly clicks and then the fuel injection pump buzzes when the key is at position III but nothing at all happens when you turn once more to start! Has anyone any ideas cos' this is my 1st Landy and i'm not too experienced with motors & electrics either!

I'd check current is getting to the starter motor.

Check the cables to it are secure and corrosion free first at the terminals. Then see if you can hear the starter solenoid clicking and/or the starter motor spinning itself.

Hope that helps?

i know sounds silly but have you checked that the gear is in park and not in a gear as it wont start if in gear on automatic just a thought

Thanks to all for the help! While waiting for a reply a friend of mine asked if i had given the starter motor a good whack with a hammer! I tried this to no avail as there wasn't much access but i was getting so frustrated that i grabbed my wrecking bar from the garage and gave it a right good thumping.......and guess what ! the bl***y thing started first time i turned the key!!!! (all of this after i'd just paid £56.00 for a new starter relay from a land rover dealer that made no difference whatsoever, some advice that was!!!) Live & learn as the saying goes. Anyone need a brand new starter relay??? Going cheap!

Wrecking Bar/Brick/6"x4" Lump of Wood/Small Girder - No. 1 Adjusting Tool

Heh heh!

I had the same problem tonight. Missus brought the car back from pony world, and abandoned it with the trailer still attached, cos it wouldn't start. Took the lappy outside, found this thread, got my LR tool kit out (hammer and crow bar) gave it a good wack and hey presto.

So Thanks very much for the advise guys. Much appreciated.

Cheers
