I will sort some pics. It is mad! He also did some throttle bodies for a Nissan V8 which is running almost 600hp. He is very anal about engineering. He managed to talk his mum and dad into letting hi turn his old bedroom into a workshop when he moved out.
 
just a quickie on the subject of axle/spring/shock alignment, im needing some radius arms but ignoring the fact that i need radius arms.. however, reading that your qt arms are extended Noisy, would that not put the shocks out of alignment with the turrets?? my shocks seem to sit forward from the bottom mounting ie they are facing a little backwards at the top, surely with extended arms thay would pick up on the turrets? if not then... whats wrong with mine?! :eek: my spring seats are tilted forward due to the lift, is it this thats pushing the shocks back??
 
GreenHornet - sorry I missed a page when reading the earlier posts, seems you are suffering with the same as mine, although mine is not rubbing... maybe its time to spend some money on radius arms...

My shocks are rubbing due to t he amount the axle has tilted following the height of my lift. Hence why the higher you go the greater amount of castor you need to bring the spring seats level again.

Unfortunately I won't be spending any money on radius arms soon. £250 on a pair of arms that do nothing more than correct this issue is a waste in my eyes. I am adjusting the mount on the axle and this will cost me a bit of welding gas and nothing but time. Articulation will be gained from an adjustment at the chassis drop mount at the rear of the arm. Again nothing but a bit of time to invest. As for the strength of original arms, well to bend these you need at least 120 tonnes of force which considering they are forged items makes them a little over engineered for the job they perform.

This practice is common in Toyota Land Cruisers and HiLux's so why we don't do it to Landies I will never know. After all I didn't suffer with poor front articulation at the weekend.

I will however be buying some descent trailing arms as they do bring a benefit due to the off angle axle mount reducing axle bind when fully articulating.

Ian. If you were to have an OEM arm in one hand and a QT in the other, I think you would find another reason for replacement.

My disco REALLY struggles off road because of its weight.

Mates in standard discos are more capable on muddy terrain because I carry so much weight. Bit of a sitting duck. When there is traction then all my mods come into play, but on wet grass etc I'd be better off standard.

You need to shed as much weight as possible, and there is a substantial amount in the front arms.

I'm actually considering carrying less tools and spares cos I've not used them I put them in 18 months ago, when I broke something and it cost me big time to get the vehicle home. Obviously I'm scared it'll happen again, but it's a bit daft when your car won't climb a seemingly easy hill. My tyres are rubbish, admittedly, but it's the weight that is the problem.

I understand about the weight issue but there is a priority issue too. I have no bumper and no steering guard at present so these need sorting out first and until that happens i cant really justify the arms. However until i sort the castor out I am rubbing the shocks.

Solution I thought would be Quick fix on castor, then Bumper steering guard and then arms and trailing arms.

Trying to do too many things is killing me. I have a P&P near me this weekend and I am considering not going as no protection to the front, no Jate rings for recovery. I'll look like an amateur lol

That's cool Ian, if you can fix your caster for free then go for it, I was just letting you know :)

Personally I don't go for steering guard but that's another story and another thread!

Bumper really is a requirement, once youre well protected you can get stuck in!

Doing it half cocked is no good when you're paying for it :)

Don't know if it helps but tyresdirect.co.uk do malatesta kaiman(same as insa track extreme ) for bout £85 each on the 265/70/16 which Is what I got mate and the difference is massive,I went from general grabber at2 to the kaimans and it's like driving a diff motor,u can feel them grabbing,very grippy but they do have downside,quite a lot of road noise but I don't use mine much on road so not a prob : )

Hi mate thanks for the info on that.

Yeah I've heard you can really feel them biting. It worries me with my lockers that I might start breaking drivetrain though. Guess I wouldn't need the lockers as much though!

33x12.5x15 are around 150 each though... :(

Same as you mate it's not much of a road car, guess I'll have to see how my finances go.

Like I said before, if I have 600 spare I might get some, hey, might get some wheels aswell lol :D

problems,

well this weekend i am doing the following;

Castor correction to stop the shocks from rubbing and give me back some self centering on the steering. Then I can turn over the relocation cones to the front as they should be and then I can go bonzai on the bumps and rough!!!

The rear bumper - adding in the supports for the quarter panel protection as the corners are still vulnerable and some idiot almost had my arse end this morning!!

Sort the reversing lights as I havent got any and struggled all week long in the mornings turning around. It also causes Havoc in a carpark lol

Drill out the snapped bolt so I can fix in some Jate rings to the rear and also the tank guard when I get it.

Add more lock to the front wheels.

Tweak the timing on the diesel pump and then sort out where the gearbox is leaking from as it is slowly dripping. Only slight but it is bugging me.

I was hoping to do the P&P but I still havent got the seat belt mounts yet so im buggered. If all goes well Julie wants to go out and take her for a spin.

Finally i also need to finish the patterns for the bumper and steering guard so i can get them laser cut.
 
Once again I have to bow to the greatness that is the LandyZone half genius.

I had another look at the axles mounts this morning and if I go ahead and redrill and weld the mounts to correct my castor now, I limit myself on replacing the original arms with lighter one later. So my stubbornness made me blind. So therefore I will leave them alone and order some new arms on payday.

Now to look at the reversing lights etc etc....
