No it's not a rose tinted spectacles, biased thing - its true.

You'd do yourself a favour to keep it, repair it and use it when the bad weather or apocalypse comes.

Well today I ordered my snorkel and picked up a pair of diff guards.

For the snorkel I chose the stainless item by Southdown 4x4. Customer service was great! Whilst there are cheaper versions and I could have made my own, I really want to put the best and most useful kit on the vehicle that i can reasonably afford.

To this end I preferred this item. The snorkel fits neatly within the extremities of the vehicle width so snagging etc won't be an issue. Also it sits in front of the window a pillar so should be safe from branches etc. quality wise they are the original snorkel for ladies since way back in 1990 pr so I think.

As for the diff guards. I have purchased a pair of QT items. These are very strong and great quality. I got these from Challenger 4x4 in Tongham near Aldershot. A nice little place who are always helpful. Also they were slightly cheaper than buying them either of eBay or directly from QT Sevices.

I will be posting pics of them being fitted and then of me testing them out lol.

Now I just need some trailing arms and castor correction arms so any suggestions on these items would be useful and appreciated.

Yes I think you're not far off there. I was going to get trailing arms from Gwyn Lewis but his prices are not that much different front QT so what do you do.
 
Well, I have qt3 up front and britpart at the rear.

I was young and without genius status back then, so I just bought what looked reet and cheap. Now wish I'd bought qt, simply because they match. Will upgrade when I've got spare cash.

I am currently rubbing the front of the shocks away at the front as the axle is so far tipped forward. I really cant afford the castor arms until next month so may have to replace the shocks at the same time boohoo.

Need to get in quick as the missus wants to book a holiday too. Perhaps i can get her to go camping

yes theyre oversized and cranked.

have been superb/fine but im into perfectionism.

spare cash is when you have enough money to buy QT rear cranked arms although you dont need them and you cant think of anything better to spend that money on at that point in time.

it may never happen :)

now GH i had a think about your shocks few weeks back and i couldnt figure it.

ok so you say your axle is tipped forward, i would agree with this, it will be.

but how can your shocks be rubbing? i mean, the turrets are mounted centrally and cannot move, so the only way your shocks could rub is if the piston shafts have bent.

an axle without enough caster would simply bind up the bushes really hard, it wouldnt move the shocks unless it had bent them.

the only other thing i thought was about radius arm length (iirc QT are longer) but then your standard arms would pull the shocks backwards and rub them on the rear of the spring retainer.

SO, i cant really see how your situation has come about, providing everything is as it should be, there would be no reason for the actual shocks to end up off centre, the main point being that the turret mount is centred.

cos his shock mounts are at the wrong angle causing the front shocks to banana making the top of the shock body rub on the botom of the shock body i presume as the axle is rotated forward.

Hi guys,

Been out tonight fitting the snorkel. Big thanks to Matt Baxter for his help and his workshop, cheers dude.

First up I will see what's up with the photos on page 49. Secondly I will get some photos posted of the snorkel once I take some tomorrow.

Now the front shocks.

OK so the shocks are extreme length plus 5 units from terrafirma. They are fitted to plus 2" turrets and originally had terrafirma relocation cones.

When fitted the spring seat is tilted forward quite a bit. This is due o the lift. I have fitted plus 3" springs but these have given me 4" at least. When I initially tested the suspension the front edge of the shocks, more so on the drivers side, was catching the front edge of the cones. I removed the cone and turned them upside down to keep them out of the way.

Since using the vehicle the last two weeks I have noticed that the plastic guard that protects the damper has gently rubbed against the body of the shock because the clearance between it and the turret is very small indeed.

I am guessing that as the vehicle has had such a high lift, the axle is tilted forward and effectively using the damper forward with it. This means that whilst the top is centred, the base is almost an inch in front of where it should be.

Correction arms should correct it but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone else with a high lift has experienced this issue.

Sam, did your QT3 arms come with the bushes etc? Also I am noticing that there are different widths available.

I will post pictures tomorrow
 
Oh yeah Spose you're right dude, axle rolls forward so the damper mount rolls forward too.

BUT with the lift, the axle moves back. QT arms are longer so it gets moved forward again to compensate.

No mate the qt arms are without bushes but they're standard fitment, same as OEM arms. Different widths according to fitment.

might b worth gettin sum cranked front arms, they usuly have the angle ajusted on them too, as for the springs, it takes a few weeks for the springs to settle.

And to me it has this problem, front edge of the cone gently rub based.

mmmm, now we see... once you have fitted your arms it should sort it... whats peoples thoughts on getting standard arms bent by glyn lewis , seems alot cheaper way to go , anyone no of anyone running a set thats been done ?
