Hi all just finished a D3 project, now starting on a 2013 Sdv6 bought as a project, is hemorrhaging oil from at least one turbo and from sump and its extension, will be giving it a good service too
Pulling the motor and box this week going to try to do it in exactly the same way as I do a D3
Got it in workshop today, up on stands made a start hopefully will come out quite quickly will see I suppose will post a few pics during the build all the best

Front bumper off today, then slam panel Same as D3 body trim wise, decided to remove radiators as a unit complete with cowling, some pipes fiddly, removed intercooler pipes and lifted the unit out with my engine hoist wasn't too bad but revealed extent of oil leak,
Sorry quick rant this is why they fail, you would have known about this for some time, then blame LR, oil also thin and as black as your hat, rant over
Plan so far remove diff housing this will allow forward movement hopefully enough to gain some altitude, need a CV boot on n/s anyway
Just the wiring, power steering pump to disconnect and what ever needs to allow me to get to engine mounts, transfer box should come off the same all but sensors on exhaust and front pipes different
Parts cannons on stand by so far gaskets, oilpump and seal, turbos, oil level sensor, timing belts, idlers and tensioner and a couple of gallons of brake cleaner and a bag of rag

Ur doing an incredible job there mate and massive respect as not a 5 x minute job along with the complexity of the d4 over the d3 setup

think the previous owner was fortunate as wonder if it would have suffered with an engine runaway particularly with the amount of oil around various places, , think ur parts cleaner will be working overtime , 🤣

Following with great interest as really do enjoy following projects like this , Fingers crossed the engine comes out without too much hassle

Thanks mate bit more of a challenge compared to D3, been a bit rough with cold then chest infection, going to start again tomorrow
09 new motor running great although expected top end to be wisper quiet with new lifters but has great throttle response sounds throaty more induction sound with 306 rockers is seems
09 handbrake quit so ordered cables and repair kit will fit in sometime
Trying to get little jobs worked up, because I have another little project in new year wink wink all the best guys
 
Got back on it today removed l/h turbo heat shields to get access to exhaust and engine mount r/h already removed and exhaust undone
Unplugged wiring tcm on drivers side near abs, all other in similar place to d3
Vacuum solenoid on drivers side wires to main loom and bracket to body apart from that pretty similar
Last thing tonight was to undo power steering pump, going to remove alternator tomorrow to gain access to drivers engine mount then just underneath to do,
Spotted what could be a vacuum issue Lol don't think it was me but can't be 100% is in pictures

Did a bit more today, spent most of the morning un-seizing crossmember now off, auxiliary fuel heat pump attached as D3, other side has a sensor wire and bracket attached, unplugged sensors and dpf pipework, just working out what stays where and what comes out with motor and box
Noticed something else not going to rant but what's missing on primary turbo?
Going ok but being honest much more fiddly than D3 taking my time, dpf, exhaust and driveshafts next, then should be able to get to l/h front pipe, can then lower boxes and remove wiring and transfer box, well that's the plan but sticks out of workshop so weather permitting as usual

Back in workshop today, had a monumental fight with exhaust clamps yesterday, cat to link pipe came undone, but clamp was seized to pipe, exhaust to dpf had to burr grind through nut and bolt but saved a clamp as their ÂŁ30 Lol
Dpf going to ivor Searle for clean
Alternator off, going to remove ducting to gain access to engine mount, just about ready to remove transfer box, started to bolt on lifting frame but have been toying with the idea of leaving transfer box on moving to whole unit forward, hoist and jack and using a strap as extra support before lifting out, will have to think about that one, it is doable without a ramp but would be so much easier with body off if you have the luxury of a ramp, all the best

Take the transfer box off mate, it's so much easier - it throws the sideways balance out too much. If you haven't already, get some 13mm crescent spanners of varying arcs and shapes, they're ideal for the top two bolts.
 
Thanks mate suspect your right, I made a spanner cut down and welded to a socket reaches down for top two, which I've been using on D3s will get on it tomorrow all the best have a good weekend
 
Had a slow sunday today, removed more of intake first, appears you were spot on @Graculus vacuum pipes below throttle body are indeed grungy melted horrible, have a another vacuum loom for want of a better description, so should be good, underneath removed props, and top bolts of transfer box, should be out tomorrow but missis is bidding on another vehicle so maybe on a collection mission instead Lol
One picture of my tools for getting to top transfer box bolts, also use it to remove turbo bolts on a D3 body on one is six sided the other twelve works well, all the best

Once I had 'em cracked off with a crescent spanner, a flex-head ratchet spanner got them out in no time, didn't have any issues with hitting the back of the 'pocket' either - but if it works for you...đź‘Ť
 
Been on a collection missis got the motor she was after, so now have a mini countryman with timing chain death rattles, parts ordered, in and out as quickly as possible but cheap and immaculate
Back on D4 today removed transfer box same as D3 basically but an extra bracket for fuel pipes and wires has to be removed to gain access to one, breather and awkward 8mm wiring fixing but came out the same, removing cat tomorrow, just diff left all the best

Cat off couple of bolts a bit tricky removed heat shield under cat to gain a bit more room, removed gearbox cable, just fuel connectors to do have ordered bigger set of pliers, lifting frame bolted on, diff out tomorrow work today, did identify vacuum lines and solenoid for engine mounts couldn't resist testing would not hold vacuum so will investigate further hopefully out over the weekend and on a stand

Bit more done today started removed front driveshafts, centre nuts, link at the top, and top arm, also 10mm nut securing brake pipe, and track rod end this give enough room to get driveshafts out then reassembled, coolers moved one completely off other can come out with motor, diff now loose will remove in the morning
Motor just about ready to lift out just a final check, much more involved at home in your shed much more that D3, but is doable I think Lol
Going to repair motor over Christmas as I have two other D3 engines to switch after mini, but will be putting it back in asap have a good weekend
