Disco refused to start this morning for first time ever. Pulled glowplugs out and 3 out of the 4 have failed however the 3 failed ones were very oily ? Is is a sign of some deeper issue ? Also any recommendations about a quality brand glowplugs welcomed........ I'm thinking bearmach

Don't buy the cheapy ones, you just end up replacing them every year.
Bosch duraterms are really good or beru which are OEM I think.

if it wouldnt start at the temps we have at the moment id think you have other issues
 
Personally bud my 300tdi starts first time every time without ever using the glow plugs just turn the key and it starts like a petrol regardless of the temperature
 
Thanks for the input, given the price of glowplugs I'm gunna drop some in and see what happens. One thing I did not mention was that I run 100% biodiesel all year round and it normally just fires instantly. I make my own diesel so I'm confident in it but maybe I've left it a little late in the year to add some coldflow additive and the combo of 3 plugs down and the temp lowering has caught me out. Off to auto factors in the morn

In the UK, it needs to be depths of winter for a 300TDi not to start because of dodgy glowplugs ...

Tis as mild as a spring day here in the UK ...
 
Lol. Sunny Chesterfield Derbyshire here. But ambient temp does affect biodiesel, I've noticed me "proper" butters gone hard in last week or so there's a drop in ambient temp.
I will post what happens when I fit the new heater plugs.

Pop a pint of petrol in the tank to thin it .... well maybe a bit more !!
add some dino diesel ... about 25% , but in winter proper about 50% ...

I'd check the lift pump, leak-off pipes and filter first ...
 
Have u got a heater in the tank to heat the bio diesel up. As its gettin cold itl thicken up. Starvin it basically.

Ive known people put 12v kettle elements in tak just to heat up off a swith
 
Is the vehicle in question an auto with EDC? They do need working glow plugs and a good cranking speed to start if cold.
 
It's a 94 manual so no EDC, solved the prob and was not heater plugs (although I've replaced them with NGK @£8 each). Basically the fuel had drained back into the tank overnight, a local Landy guy said I needed to replace the filter head. So trotted off to the scrappy and paid £10 for a used filter head then fitted it with a new fuel filter and bingo it just fires instantly.
The only winter cold running mod I've done is to fit a heat wrap around the fuel filter. Basically a electric blanket lol. Check out "keenovo" as a search on evilBAy. It's wired to a simple on off switch on the dash. Serve me fine the last 2 winters.
