Hi guys just a post to see if it's possible to do a petrol to deasil engine swap I have not seen anything online about it. Is there a thread where it shows you how to do it or anything that will help me to do it as I love my Landy and don't want to sell it for a deasil I want to swap the v8 for a deasil engine of you get my drift Any info or guides would be a great help thanks guys

Just drive the V8 sensibly and get it on LPG.

Peter
+1 on that...
You're better off having a good LPG kit installed.
I imagine it would cost you more in time and money to get that kind of work done than to simply have LPG installed or get a second one with a diesel.

Cheers for the reply guys. It's got an lpg system installed with a slung under tank it was there when I bought it. Reason why I want to change from a v8 to deasil is becouse its eating oil like no tommorow and keep getting bad feeling about it as you hear loads of rumours about these engines. What would you guys rather have a v8 or a deasil as I just don't know what to do? I had a td5 but sold it an got a v8 but can't decide which one is better

V8 every time!

Various things to look at for oil consumption, in particular the oil separator in the driver's side rocker cover, if that is broken or clogged it will screw up the airflow through the engine.

We've got three V8's in the family, TD5's never figured.

Cheers Peter I do love the v8 noise I replaced the centre box with a straight pipe to open it up a bit is that safe to do? Plus how do I get the rocker cover off an what's does the separator look like and how will I tell if it's broken cheers man

You are really not doing any favours with a straight-through pipe, it's a 2.2 tonne brick, and not the sort of thing you want to go racing in.

LLJ000010 is the part, it is located in the driver's side rocker cover breather pipe spout. I think you can tease it out without removing too much.

It's more likely to be clogged up with sludge than broken.

It's only moulded plastic.

then how do you know the td5 is not good enough? ... even with all the td5's common issues, watching the canadian D2 forum where all are V8's i've got scared how much trouble they have with those engines, more expensive fixes than for a td5 IMO... off course that we can't compare the ride and engien's noise but that's other subject:cool:

Well it can be done but wont be cheap. I havnt done one myself but been around motors for a good few years.
You would be better buying a diesel and selling the V8.
If you need to ask how to take a rocker cover off the I take it your not very experienced with spanners and cars.
There is a lot more than just dropping an engine in. Such as fuel system and electrics to think about.

Purely on BHP as we bought the Discovery to tow our display engine trailer. 135bhp against 183bhp was a 'no contest'.

Ours has been cheap and reliable over nearly 90k miles, but we did fit a short engine and keep religiously to the coolant spec's which is critical for an all-alloy engine.

Here it is at LZ10:

No doubt about the BHP but IMO it's more about torque for towing and a stage 2 remapped td5(like mine) has 180BHP with 400NM torque at 28-30mpg consumption(depending on right foot's weight) while a std V8(which is not very tunable in the engine management area) has 340NM at ...i have no idea what mpg... anyway, it's a matter of taste and choice so no debate on that

Yes, you can remap the TD5, but the V8 does it in standard form without any tweaks.

Towing is a bit of a natural job for Discoveries, they do it so well, but the diesels just seem to be so unreliable to me, at least going by the number of posts on LZ, but against that the numbers sold compared to the V8 must have some significance.

Great pity that Rover didn't take the TD5 engine development further, it could have been an excellent engine given time and development funds..

Our Mercedes Vario has 4.25litres, 136bhp and some indecent amount of torque, but they kept the power down in the interests of reliability. It is very similar to a TD5, unit mechanical injection pumps, one per cylinder but with a separate injector. Turbo intercooled, 176bhp only on the latest version, really low-stressed engine.

We have friends with TD5's, one is chipped, the others are standard, but they don't tow at maximum weight like we do.

Should be at LZ12 with it.

A bit off track here, but the discovery 2 is certainly a very good looking vehicle, isn't it?
I especially like the look of the pre-facelift models.
For me, neither the discovery 3/4 or the RR ejoke cut it for me in the looks department.
They certainly don't make them like they used to anymore:(

It was an iconic vehicle for a generation, and as you say, still looks good now.

D3/D4 are not vehicles I'd buy, but they never were at that price!

At last, somebody else that prefers the look of pre facelift d2's!!

It's worth mentioning that although the d3 does nothing for me at all, I would happily trade both bollocks for a d4, preferably with a v8 (not available in UK)

Hi guys sorry haven't been replying works been mad busy. I'm just getting into taking engines apart and stuff like that I'm good with anything else tho. I think I'm going to keep my v8 and buy a defender 90 aswell. Why can't the v8 be tuned?

With a diesel you *basically* just squirt more in, yet with petrol engine, mixture and timing wise right is right, you have to improve flow, like head ports and valves, manifolds....

Who says the v8 can't be tuned?

This is the first v8 I have owned so am just getting used to these engines now. What would be needed to tune the 4.0 v8 or is it better to be kept standard?

Suggest u search, either the V8 Forum or Google how to tune a Rover V8 EFI, all the info is there believe it or not, so no need in repeating it.
