If your fitting polybushes all of the old bush has to come out. Best way to get that last metal sleeve out if you dont have access to a hydraulic press is to cut it with a hacksaw in one or two places then hammer it out.

Cheers mate, I used a Jigsaw with a metal blade... Just wasn't sure if the last sleeve was part of the bush or had to stay in... I will remove it now :high5:

The simply answer is yes it all has to come out regardless of whether you are fitting oem or polybushes.

I have just done them on my radius arms. Used a drill through the outer rubber rim which leaves just the outer metal sleeve in place. Then just used my powerfile to almost file through the sleeve instead of trying to hacksaw it. Once it was almost all the way through a tap with the cold chisel saw it gone

Well done on the first welds too. I think i would have been tempted to just replace that cross member but flair play to you I think you have done a good job of it.

Cheers mate as above I used a jigsaw and a bit of burning to get them out. Just wasn't sure about the last sleeve....

Yeah I was tempted to replace the whole thing but if I start down that route I will end up replacing everything. When I started I was intending this to be as much resto of current parts as pos. Trying to keep to the basic rebuild as much as pos.... :)

However I am on a steep learning curve... the more you take off the more you see. My dad restored several old houses and it was the same with those, when you start digging out the old crap it never seems to stop... I could have made the cross member easier for myself by cutting one piece and welding it in but decided to use my free bits and get some welding practice :D

If you get a thin punch or strong screwdriver you can drive it between the sleeve and the raidus arm and it will fold in on itself and just fall out. No need to drill/burn/cut anything.

Yeah I found using a jigsaw, burning and punch a good combo... Will just get an old screw driver behind the last sleeve and bend it in. I dont want to go to far and start cutting in to the radius arm...:screaming_bug_eye_f

That welding looks good for Gassless, I cut them through with a hacksaw then hit a punch next to the cut and they fell out.

Thanks mate, I am learning... One of the deals I had with the wife was no gas cylinders in the garage.... don't ask, I tried to explain :der: but gave up and made a tactical retreat ... I sacrificed the gas for the greater good :D

So as I'm on a first aid course Monday Tuesday this week I got home early today. Very excited as I purchased my little compressor, some blasting grit and accessories pack. Telling the wife I could do the air in her tyres for free helped :high5:

So hopefully that will arrive tom, when I'll not be here :( but if its local might be able to go pick it up, if not it'll be friday. Anyway this means many things paint brushes are now out the window, got a spray gun... YEEEHAAA :clap2: and I can really get the rust worked off with the grit blaster...

Here's tonights pics, got going with the mega heavy pot of cold galv...

Ok so the last one was of the o/s rear wing which I am going to patch next. Going to remove the lip and weld a new one in underneath. Also both rear arches need the seat belt mounts removing and new bits welding in... How it passed its MOT last year will remain a mystery to me, I will post pics before I cut them out. I very rarely carry people in the back but really glad I don't and didn't have an accident as the would have popped out no problems...

Grit blast is slow, I prefere wire wheels on 4.5 grinders, grit blasters give a realy good finish though, I did my pedal box last summer and looks great. Used kiln dried sand from wickes and worked well, but you use a lot.

Yeah I have tried a flappy paddle grinder 40grit, also wire wheel they both work well but I can't get right in to the little corners. I've got a spot blaster will do big surfaces with the grinder.

Sounds like we are on the same wavelength

Thanks for your advice and I totally see where you are coming from. I still find it hard to justify (for instance) the difference of almost 100 quid between genuine brake calipers and pattern, OEM ones... Especially as I own a Jag as well and have found Jag/Landrover do stamp stuff with their name and triple the price..

Are they really that bad that they are unsafe? I also think some confusion can be had because as you say they put their name to a whole range of quality... I.e some stuff they stock is OEM.. I don't know, you have left me in a quandary... I am just struggling to see that they could be THAT bad to be unsafe.... :scratching_chin:

Hi mate, coming from a range rover/disco background, I have always rebuilt original calipers using stainless pistons and OEM seal kits, works a treat every time and saves a few quid! If you are looking for rear brake discs, the recent ones I ordered from britpart were actually AP Lockheed discs so basically genuine! Might be different another week though depending on which supplier they use I suppose?!

Good luck with the disco, You may have just inspired me to restore the family heirloom disco that nearly got sent to the scrappy last week, although I did swear not to do another!

Maybe!!??? .... Go on you know you want to... Can I get an :amen:..

Thanks for the comments... Its good to think people are at least gaining something (even a vague sense of inspiration) from my ramblings and mistakes :D

As for Britpart I've not ordered anything as yet still cleaning up welding.... painting.... cleaning up.... welding.... painting.... Welding..... welding.... welding.... welding...... ....... ........... welding.....
My rear calipers are pretty severe in the rust stakes so I will def replace those, however if the front ones are ok I will refurb.... thanks for your advice, and post lots of pics of your disco..... That you ARE going to repair :D:D:D:D

Ok so not much done this week. My compressor still hasn't arrived, Machine Mart sent all the other bits just not the thing to plug them in to!!! :violent:

I'm waiting for it before I continue with the chassis as I want to get some rust out of little corners. Anyway i had a little time today so thought I'd start on the rear arches, I forgot to take a photo of the off side one before cutting it out but if you imagine the picture of the near side is about three times worse and hanging off you'll get the idea.

so this is n/s the o/s was completely rusted round three sides once the paint was removed

So this is the patch welded in. Feel my welds are getting better this is before I clean it up with a flappy wheel...

Still got some patching to do on this bit but I'm getting there slowly.... the n/s arch is not nearly as bad so that will be quicker to cut out and patch. By then hopefully my compressor will have turned up and I can really get on. Still got the smell of flux up my nose from all the welding :D

Nice work so far... try slowing the motion down and filling the welds a lil more. I tend to do a bit like lil overlapping circles

Cheers mate I will try that...

Not been able to do any over the weekend but will hopefully, fingers crossed, get back to it tonight...

Well I'm still waiting for a compressor... Phoned Machine Mart yesterday and it turns out they haven't got any in stock and won't have till 5th of July. Anyway asked for a refund on that an wondered off to buy a wolf compressor. Its double the size with a little more power for only a little more money. We'll see when that one arrives!! Can't believe the size compressor I want seems to be in such high demand that everywhere has sold out!!!.... very frustrating.....

ITTTTSSSS AAAAAARRRRIVED!!!!!!!!!!!

Great bit of kit Wolf Air Compressor, been fiddling this evening... Will let you know if I have any problems with it. So far everything seems sturdy and sound turns off and on when it should so tom after work its a trip to get the grit and the sodium bicarb then I can start getting in to the corners of that rust... Need a longer hose and some more connectors. Then its air ratchet time.... :D
