As I have to change the transfer box on mi 110 200tdi sw I was thinking of putting a Disco transfer box on it for better cruising but have been getting conflicting reports!!

Some say it's the "Dogs what nots" better motorway cruising, better mpg, less noise etc... and others say it's a disaster as it won't pull in 5th and you spend half of the time in 4th or even 3rd :eek:

Who's dun it and what de yeh reckon???????????

ave done it to my 110 - and maybe 20 other peeps landys, it's the best "upgrade" going

anyone who moans about having to change down too often should have sorted their engine first - a properly serviced, good condition 200/300 is more than able to run those ratios

That's what I could'nt understand that if a Disco could handle them ratios why the feck not a Def!

And it won't be used for towing as I have a Disco for that.
 
Is it difficult to do? When I take the tdi out of my Discovery next weekend, I'm thinking about taking out the gearbox and transfer box along with it in one lump, but not really sure how to do it. I've an engine hoist, but not really sure on the technique on removing the whole lot in one go. I also want to fit the transfer box onto my 110.
 
split the GB and tranny box, it's just a few bolts - then it's a 1 man task to drop it

replace the mounting bolts with some slotted machine screws that have had their heads chopped off - you can then use these to slide the tranny along and away from the GB output shaft, and once it's clear of the seal drop it down to the floor - same trick in reverse when you refit to the depender

don't forget to change the seal, clean the mating faces and smear a drop of sealer on the faces before you re-fit

the hardest parts will be getting the props, diff lock and tranny brake bits off

budget for a days steady plod to get it done

Tyre size and total circumferance. discos run normally 205R16's most defenders come fitted with 235/85 16 tyres or 750R16 tyres thats why the ratios are different. Also a disco is a family "car" compared to a workhores of a defender ratios were decided becausecruising down the motorway is not what defenders were designed for although they do it perfectly well and the ratios offered was more suited to towing trailers and working. I have a disco tranny box and 37 inch genuine size tyres yes its horrendus 1st is crap, 5th is a joke and lowrange is not as nice as it once was. I will be curing this hopefully this weekend with different ratio diffs to bring it bacl to higher than standard defender tranny box on 750's but not as high as a disco box on 750's with the added benifit of a nice low range.

Taking my Defender 1.4 transfer box out (almost there after 7 hours :mad: cushion, cubby box and foot plates were hyper rusty) and changing it for a 1.2 Disco box. I'm using the handbrake parts from the Defender so handbrake should be OK. What about the speedo calibration. Shall I use the "svirwel" from the Def-box or the Disco-box or something different as the speedo calibration from the Disco could be different from the Def:confused:
Alternatively one could use a felttip pen to indicate the new speed, but I would have the speedo working if poss.

Swap out the speedo gear its one 8mm nyloc nut and a clamp swap it for the gear out your defender box if you are worried. Depending on tyre size you may find you get a more accurate indicated speed on the speedo to GPS device using the disco gear (red) from memory) but that may screw up your trip miles. I think 750R16 speedo gear is a yellowy/green colour
 
I had a disco transfer box in my 300tdi 110. The only problem I had when towing heavy loads was when pulling away. I used first low and then switched to first high when moving to get around it. Never had any problems in 4th of 5th though.

It was fair comment what yeh said and makes sense but at the end of the day everyone to their own. I have the possibility of a good cheap Disco T/box so I reckon I'm gunna buy it and bunk it on- What the hell, cun always takeit orf again :D
 
Yup thanks, I have swapped the 205s for the 7.50R16s a while ago so the 10% too fast showing speedo is now down to 3% too fast which is OK. With the disco transfer box that will be showing 10% too slow, so I will try what I think you say and use the disco svirwel. I come back in 2 weeks ! whn I have done that :eek:

Ups sugar! I have now actually de-oiled the Disco tranny box and found out the speedo is electronic! Where the speedo cable enters the box instead of a hole for the spedo cable there is small black plastic box with the id: 4H-221 AMR 1253. If I take that box of is the "normal" speedo cable hole there or am I doomed!!

How do!

Popped my 200tdi Disco transfer box on this weekend whilst changing the clutch and first results are very encourageing :):):)

Only been on a few local trips it pulls well in all gears and can quite happily pop her in fifth at 40mph and she will pull away no probs.

Will find out the real difference Wednesday as we have a motorway trip to do.
 
thinking of doing this to a td, which will eventually be turned into a 200. but in the mean time, do you recon it will survive?
 
Don't do it. You'll not be able to pull anywhere near as much and it will be crap off road. I won't ever do it. I've got huge wheels on which make up for it slightly but I don't want any higher ratio. If cruising at 50 is the sacrifice I make for it pulling like a train, then I'll make that sacrifice. And before anyone says, my engine is a 200, mint and has been tuned and upped the boost.
