I was looking into doing this. Is it right by turning the pin it only increases power when boosting? Not before the turbo kicks in? Ideally I'd like a little more umph before the turbo or the turbo kick in sooner. Is that possible?

It does on and off boost, tuning the pump is an art, and lots of experimenting is needed, but the the biggest gains are boost pin 45to90 degs clockwise, and the same with the max fuel screw on the back of the pump
There are a few other adjustments as well but they make very little difference
If you search google for tuning the Bosch Ve pump you will have plenty of reading to do!

But you have to remember even when tweaked they still aint no ball of fire

If it's your first Defender, are you 100% sure you're not it low ratio?

I get that. It's technically my second defender but as I only had the first one for 3 weeks before the seller took it back for multiple reasons. I still just class this is my first ownership. The other was a 300tdi. It smoked on heavy acceleration but it did move was fun to drive. This feels just wrong. I'll play with the pump.

I still really feel this has drifted a little from the original question. About disco transfer boxes. Is it possible an raf truck might have had a low transfer box in it. Maybe for pulling planes? If it was a low box. Would it be driving the way I'm describing? Everyone is pointing to fault finding but if it has a rock crawler box could that not be the problem? What pros/cons to fitting a disco transfer box?

Disco box is the best thing I did. Running 265 75 16 and I've towed a bit , no problems although hills with a range rover p38 on the back were a lot slower.
Low box is unaffected. I have a slight pump tweak but no extra boost.
A slight mod is needed iirc to the handbrake cable mounting if you use your original linkage, think a hole, already there, needs tapping out to M8.

The xFer box usually has a label on the output case with a 1.22 or whatever showing. Have you found the LT230 serial number on the casing? It will be a definitive answer when deciphered……Ashcrofts are a mine of info to help or the sage ones on here. As for fitting a disco box, it depends what your replacing but generally it’s a vast improvement for cruising in my experience

Thanks for that mate, sort of thing I was curious to find out. Did you notice any improvement on mpg at all?

Dunno it was too long ago to reminder and I started making my own biodiesel not long after so mpg doesn't bother me much. I do remember 30mpg driving very carefully mainly around A roads when I was on pump diesel, 110sw with lots of tat bolted to it too.

Hahaah thats amazing. I know its another subject is making your own fuel difficult?

Getting the used oil is the hardest bit.
It's a long learning curve and I find it easy now, loads of stress when I first started though. It's quite dangerous too so you need to be aware of that.
Explosive chemicals that you have to heat up and skin burning/lung rotting catalysts.

Wow okay I'll stick to being robbed at the pump then quite attached to my lungs and skin. Take my hat off to you though!

Hi all.

Recently bought myself a 1985 ex mod 110 defender, belive it to be ex RAF military police.

It's had the N/A block swapped out for a disco 200tdi. It has a lt77 box.

I'm finding it best to pull off in second gear as its so slow in first. Not that it feels normal in second. Its slow to get going in any gear then eventually picks up.

A mechanic friend of mine seems to think it might have a rock crawler transfer box and that. A disco one would change the way it drives.

If I'm honest it Feels dangerous trying to pull out at junctions even in second. And feels like your driving in 4th on at 60mph in 5th.

Any advice, knowledge or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Previous searches seems to knock putting a disco transfer box in it? Never gonna toe. I might like to do some light greenlaning at some point but soley it's my daily driver and work van.

At present it's not pleasurable to drive as is.

Thanks in advance ☺
What's it like when you put it in low ratio
