I've searched numerous forums posts with
To try to find and answer to my problems but haven't found what I think may be an answer as the problems don't match.

Anyway my car hates starting after being left for a few hours (especially in the morning). The glow plug light goes out and when you start it the starter turns over but it won't fire up it just turns over till it eventually starts. When it does start it's fine to drive no misfire or power issues.

If I stop and start again it starts fine.

It's had a new fuel filter, pump , diesel reg. There doesn't appear to be any diesel in sump etc.

Do people think it may be starter
Motor or more a fuel prob.

Meant to add that I have had the engine to ecu loom done but haven't checked it recently. Also a system purge doesn't seem to make any difference to it's starting.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Turn the ignition on and wait DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CRANK THE ENGINE OVER. Listen to the fuel pump. Is it noisey. Does it sound like it's gurgling? Continue waiting and see if it quietens down. If the pump stops after 30 seconds, press the accelerator pedal 5 times in quick succession. It should start up again and run non stop for a couple of mins. It is now in purge mode to help remove the air in the fuel system. Has it gone quiet now? Then try starting. If the pump was noisey and then quietened down or if it fires first time after doing the above, you have air in your fuel system and now need to start working through the fuel system to find out how the air is getting in.

Fascinating. Thanks for the above, just solved a problem for a mate.

There is a slight gurgle / whine from pump during startup and subsequent purge but even after a full purge cycle as described it still starts poorly. Could it be the copper rings or starter or even oil in ecu.

When going it goes really well no issues once started.

Btw thanks for the help.

Gonna take it to an ILR guy near me. Nothing seems to work so I'm gonna bite the bullet and suffer GBH of the wallet. Will let you know what happens.

No probs.:)

Also meant to add the pump canbe noisy after / during use but it's a brand new genuine pump.

When did it last have a fuel filter fitted? Was it a good quality filter or a nasty ****part jobbie?

It's unlikely to be oil in the injector loom as that tends to rear it's head when warn and not cold.

It does sound like an injector or injector seal fault.

I did the filter around 3 months. Granted it was not an expensive filter I put on but it didn't make any difference. I guess I'll see what the garage says but I bet your right about the injector seal. Will let you know the outcome once I wipe away the tears after I pay.

Thanks alot I know I'm a new member and I appreciate you helping a newbie.

I also experienced this on the my D2 TD5 that I have just got.
The guy did saythat he had done the injector seal and it has had a new engine loom as he had running issues, and said it was sorted.
I managed to start mine by using a jump start pack and a spare battery, It seemed to be turning over fine, but when looking at the dash upon cranking all the lights where flashing wich made me think there was not quite enough juice in the battery?
Also after one starting attempt, the 'sports mode' light and 'm' light stayed on?

Hi all sorry for the late response.

I had the injector seals and orings done and it is much improved. The pumps quieter and starting better. Thanks again for you help and advice.

nice one.:)

cheers for getting back to us.

This sounds like the trouble I'm having. Iv'e had the pump out of the tank to check the gauze, changed the fuel and ait filters, checked for aor leaks with soapy water while the pump is running (if air can get in then should blow bubbles while it gets out again). I can't see any wet patches on the fuel systen. I even jetwashed the engine to make it easier to see what was going on. The engine cover is staying off while investigations continue.
Then last night While I dropped my
Son off in Newcastle for a night out when the car stopped for no reason at the lights next to the general hospital. It just stopped. I flattened the battery trying to get it going so we pushed it to a safe place where I called the AA. They connected jump leads without success then applied cold start to the air intake which had the engine jump into life.
The AA man said it could be a cold start injector or maybe the connections to the ECU.
I made it home. Only just because it stopped again as I hit the driveway. It is now parked on my lawn until tomorrow.
The AAman though it could even be the fireing signal between the ECU and injectors. Something about the pins on the connector plugs corroding or breaking off. I am baout to go out and have a fiddle.
:(

I'm having the same kind of trouble at the moment, with my 02 td5 was it the injector seals that were causing the problem?

Mine was reluctant to start with less than half a tank of fuel.
After changing all the expensive bits turned out to be a 50p
Air Bleed Valve in the fuel pipes near the filter.
