had a mate fit new cam belt the other day, i was with him while he did it so i could watch and learn, all went well and within couiple of hours belt was back on.
as far as i can tell he did everything right except loosening the bolts on pump,
he did turn engine twice by hand before starting on key.
on starting the engine was running ''lumpy'', no power and chucking out a lot of white/blueish smoke, he said pump timing was too advanced.
he adjusted pump timing by taking the inspection plate off and loosening 3 screws then turning engine slightly by hand, after a good hour off this the smoking stopped and the engine wasnt running lumpy, but the engine had developed a knock or tap,he adjusted a little more and said he was happy that the engine sounded fine, i know my engine and it does still have the tap/knocking noise and seems a little down on power.
have been reading on the net and this does seem to sound like pump timing still off,
would you guys agree that pump timing is off or could cam timing be out slightly?
thanks

loosened pump bolts ? do you mean 3 pump pulley bolts ,timing is obviously not right ,tensioning needs redoing after turning over twice after first tensioning ,id remove front cover and check cam and pump , when tensioned twice and cam wset pump can be tweaked by using a 9.5 drill bit and with 3 pulley bolts loosened and usin spanner on pump nut turn pump nut clockwise against drill bit while 3 bolts are tightenend ,if you want to make it spot on repeat with progressively smaller drill bits till it has diesel knock and then go back to drill bit just before knock

yes he loosened the 3 bolts on pump pulley,he did tensioning again after turning twice by hand, he was using 9.5 mm drill bit on pump,

so do you think it is just pump timing, and is the noise taht i am hearing 'diesel knock',
i think i could adjust the pump timing myself as the way you have explained it sounds pretty simple.

id check cam timing too ,it should be reasonable to do since its been apart ,
it all came off no probs when it was done, mate said its usually a pain getting the bottom cam off, i dont want to mess with cam timing so i'll trake it through to my mechanic as the cam belt was done at billing and i live in sunderland and my mate lives in kent!!

its just if pump was wrong cam could be also and its best to know there both spot on , it could be a coincidence but timing does need to be correct

Not a help but that sounds a lot better than mine

I think mines fooked I was sold a duff one :violin:

that sound alittle unhealthy. did mine not so long back, glad i triple checked before i rebuilt it.

it was pump timing, thought it was to advanced so retarded a little, which left her running lumpy and smoking, advanced few mm and was still smoking but not lumpy, advanced another mm and knock was back, retarded a tiny bit and bingo, no smoke,no knock= one happy disco owner, thanks for all your help and advice
