Hi there every one,
I have just come ashore after many years working on ships tugs and just about anything marine, still not wanting to vegetate in a corner I have taken a job with a farmer where I am expected to look after his antique and "is that still running" equipment, so here is my problem He has said I have the use of "the Disco" which is now run on red diesel and has no reg number no back windows and is so I can get around the various farm sites without using my own car (it just would not do it) so he then gave me the latest on this vehicle = it will not start !
Looking under the bonnet I see what was an alarm unit with all the 4 wires cut. he assured me it drove OFF the low loader and was used for a few weeks but then the battery went flat and it is now dead.
I have put my multi meter on the pre heat and they are getting voltage when the key is turned (times off as expected) there are two (three cable connectors) to the fuel pump, on one I get circuit between the outer cables when the ignition is turned on and no connection when the key is OFF. All the fuses I can find are OK I dismantled no's 1 injector pipe and when the engine is turned over no fuel so where can I or what can I do to gain fuel from the injector pump.
The fuse case say's fuel pump but I do not hear any and some this would not fully run until oil pressure command but that is like on marine equipment where I have diagrams and build info but here I have a red Disco which I can use IF I can get the thing to run!
As I have about as much knowledge as a demented gnat when it comes to Land Rover Electrics I would appreciate as much help as possible (my Honda CRV would last about a week on the farm fields and Im loathed to put all the tools and stuff inside then try to drive to the middle of a muddy field) I am using a Tractor at the moment and OH how not much fun is that!.
If there is a way to over come the immobiliser so that I can start the thing I will be a happy old boy, there is no need to lock it as there are no back windows anyway lol.

Thanks in advance R

Hi and welcome to the mad house.
We'll need a little more info, what year and what engine ?

First is to identify which engine / model you have and Year. As they are different animals electrically and mechanically.

200 Tdi?or the simiar 300Tdi?
TD5?

As said in your intro post. If you do not know the difference then a photo of the engine bay will help identify it.

You mention a fuel pump, 200/ 300 tdi's do not have an electric fuel pump, it is a mechanical lift pump on the drivers side of the engine. This can be mechanically hand operated to check fuel is being pumped.

TD5 's do have an electric fuel pump in the tank. sometimes you can hear it , but it is very quiet.

Good luck.

Cheers

We also need to know what gearbox as this can make a difference as it what fuel pump you have.

Now I know that ships are SO much easier then working down on the farm !! lol
I will try to get the pictures and other information tomorrow, I am almost positive there is a manual fuel lift pump but as for the rest I think the VIN is there.
I had a surprise today even tractors now have EMU's ? you know this is a lump of iron to which is ragged to destruction through 1.8 meter of liquid MUD and the maker wants to fit Electronics'
Me thinks I may have to return to ships lol
Honest I'll get as much info and pictures as possible so that I can at least use this disco on the farm.

Thanks

Hi all, Have had a short time when I could take a few pictures of the offending item. it has a manual gearbox
so from the images will this help in getting to the bottom of this little problem with no fuel injection. 20160429_065239.jpg And from the farmer himself it is a 300 tdi (I think) 20160429_065138.jpg The VIN is there but no reg! and the injection pump has electricery stuff 20160429_065207.jpg
20160429_065224.jpg So to cap things off All I need is to find out how to get the injector pump working so I can save destroying my Honda.

You say it will not start.

Does it turn over on the key?
Do you use the key to lock it? have you tried using the EKA ( emergency key access ) code?

Cheers

Hi there,
The disco is not locked via key or the missing fob.. lol EKA ?? what where and how ?
You see I AM that demented Gnat who has no idea about this complicated stuff, give me a good old marine engine and I am fine even down to the PT100 sensor and telemetry they have but to find my way round a machine with tyres I could take days nay weeks learning and then still find it was just a twiddle of the thingamy dofa at the left of the round bit.
As I said I am lost on what to do, I just need to drive this thing between the farms.

300 TDi manual. (non electronic) injection pump (IP / AKA FIP )

If it turns over on the key, and you have fuel at the lift pump - disconnect the white wire from the stop solenoid on the rear of the IP, and connect a live feed to the same place - preferably fused - I have a "bodge it test lead" for such purposes with a crocodile clip on one end, and a lucar connector on the other - you are bypassing part of the immobiliser in this way. If it does not turn over - then you can try bypassing that part by running a similar wire from the battery +ve to the starters 1/4" lucar terminal.

make sense?

Hi Radisson,

So the first question is , does it turn over when you try and start it?

Following the answer see DiscoBFG's answer above, and let us know.

Cheers

Hi there,
Yes it cranks over fine and IF I open the bleed for the filter then there is some (not much in my opinion) fuel when it is wound over.
The heaters all come on and I have tested the resistance for then all are OK bar one which is low but that should not stop it delivering fuel out of the IP

Disco1BFG you say it is a non electronic FIP so what are the two sets of connectors for both have three wires and I assume one to be the injection control (on/OFF) and possibly an excess fuel delivery while cranking but I could be well away form the truth (this is the one to the centre body of the IP) there is another to the FWD upper position ?

(IIRC), the only electronic FIP fitted to a D1 looks like this:-
Only fitted to late auto's - quite a few have been removed by now as parts for the rest of the system are NLA.

The wiring is, also IIRC, for the EGR control system, and the second connector is probably for a cold start advance, the electrical version of which I have little experience of - which might make it quite a late 300.... if I get time, I will decode your VIN, and let you know...

I did try and upload a picture of the EDC pump you don't have.... it hasn't worked.....o_O:rolleyes:

I'll be back :)

Cool.

OK more info, then when you crank it there is NO diesel at the injectors.

Do you have a spade connector at the back of the fuel injection pump? to the left of the red circle in your photo? below the fuel connection. See yellow arrow in pic below.

Cheers
