Hi
When I picked up my disco 2 TD5 auto and drove it up the road, one of the turbo pipes hadn't been done up tight enough, as soon as i heard the sound I turned round and popped back to the garage and they tightened it up and all was well.
What I didn't do was watch as he did it, so not sure which one it was.

Now the whistling has come back as soon as the turbo kicks in, if I keep revs below 2500 it doesn't happen, I know bugger all about turbos, having never had one before, all my other vehicles have a perkins 4.236.
My son reckons it is the intake leaking by the sound it makes, I myself have no idea, I was thinking of just changing the hoses but thought I should ask here first if there is a common problem to look for first.

It doesn't sound as loud as the first time it happened but that time I did open it up full revs to go up a hill from a standing start, this time I was driving in light fog and i wasn't going fast so didn't sound so loud.

Any suggestions before i get me some hoses and should I get a coloured silicone type if I do so leaks can be spotted more easily?

Best thing is look for a loose jubilee clip. check tightness, chances are you have a jubilee clip that has been overtorqued. Also check the pipes for splits. IMO, Silicone hoses will not help you find the leak. Unless you want some cool looking pipes.

Any spare parts you need , best thing i find is find the part number from this site, http://allbrit.de/UGCtree.cfm?SPRACHE=EN then using the partnumber search on google / ebay and see what comes up. Also another good website is lrdirect.co.uk

I have used LRdirect in the past as some defender parts are a direct swap for some dodge 50 brake parts but now usually use LRTradeParts.co.uk because they are only five minutes from my boat :)
I am not worried about colourful hoses and am happy to fit standard, I have tightened a couple of hose clips but will do them all and see if it makes a difference, if not I will just replace them all :)

As @neilly has said, silicone pipes will just be shiny and colourful, but they'll also leave your bank balance with less than if you fit standard ones.
You say you have no experience of turbos, they're nothing more than an air compressor on one side driven by a turbine on the other side. The turbine is driven by the flow of exhaust gases as they pass down the pipe to the outside world. The compressor then sucks in the fresh air through the air filter and compresses it. Because the air can get a bit hot, it's then fed through the intercooler, that's like a big radiator and out of there into the inlet manifold.
That's basically what the turbo does, but there are some other bits around it to measure and control when and how much it does what it does.
So, check for splits in the big rubber pipes and loose or broken jubilee clips on the left hand side (passenger's side) of the engine and by doing it systematically you should be able to find your way around.
Whistling can come from the intercooler side of the turbo, but if all the pipes are checked OK then the next place to be looking, and listening is around the exhaust manifold joint to the cylinder head.

It is funny how I have been working on vehicles since 1982 and never had a turbo to deal with, nothing, nada, well I have supplied new ones for dodge 50's but that's about my experience, so this is a good lerning curve for me.
I have had a dig around and found some loose jubilee clips on the intercooler side, I haven't had a chance to drive it yet as we are currently trying to get a bloody mouse out of our boat but I will have a drive in a while and see if i is any better.
As for hoses I have always just used standard rubber ones in the past and TBH as you say I don't need to spend more on something that won't really make a difference.

Well I tightened all I could find and it did seem better, I only did a 30 mile round trip but was much quieter, I am off to the garage to find out which hos was loose the first time round tomorrow as I didn't have time today.
Will have a better look with some decent light tomorrow at the actual hoses.

They are the ones I was looking at, I don't want bright pink or yellow, think I will stick with those black ones :)
