It's just as possible in a TD5 Defender too. People tell me I'm a fast driver, and the only Land Rover products that pass me on the motorway are Disco IIs (and IIIs too, but they've got a different engine). So it's clearly possible. In standard tune the TD5 engine isn't that stressed, and the revs are electronically limited. If you're remapped and are squeezing 200 plus bhp out of it, of course there are more things to go wrong. But that's a story for another day.
 
Just got back from the Lakes - first long trip in it without towing a horse trailer. Up there, bimbling about then back home again saw about 27 MPG. Not as much as I'd hoped, but better than the usual 22MPG I see on local usage.
 
I find mines very happy about the 65 mark, it will of course go much much faster but a happy cruising speed I find preferable, anything much over 70 and Im always thinking it could do with a 6th gear (manual box).
