As far as I understood it vehicles used on UK roads should only display white light to the front & red to the rear (except for reversing lamp(s) so those marker lights within the front indicator lens shouldn't be lit hence the reason new D2's for the UK market either had no bulbs in the marker light holders & or the wiring connector wasn't attatched to the bulb holder. So if amber light is showing to the front it should be an mot failure. The side lights (or parking lights because that's all they're fit for IMO, how many times have you seen people use them in low light/rain & fog ? thinking they can be seen) either within the headlight or separate should work & show white light.
I can't remember now but it might be possible to get the side & marker light wiring connectors mixed up as I think they're the same type of connector although the wiring colours are different.
The bulb for the side marker is 5w cap-less, the bulb for the indicator is 21w bayonet cap so totally different, simples.

I had a new pre-facelift D2 and that was supplied from LR with working amber side markers, no issues with MOT in the 5 years i ran it plus every HGV in the UK has amber side marker lamps fitted by law so definitely not an issue for "vehicles used on UK roads"

I meant the side light (in the h/l) & marker light connectors both 5w bulbs not the indicator bulb connector but like I say I can't remember & would have to look.;)

The HGV's do indeed have amber lights on the side but the ones facing back & front
Andy my MY2000 D2 came with amber marker lights as standard and has never failed an MOT yet. even though LR can be real tw@ts I don't think even they would build a car that would fail an MOT as standard.
Also, as I found out at an MOT donkey's years ago, you can drive a car with yellow headlights, but both must be yellow, I failed cos I had one of each and the inspector told me all this. They must simply match.
From the Gov.uk manual
"The colour of the light headlamps emit must be one of the following:

  • white
  • predominantly white with blue tinge
  • yellow"

See https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-ins...ectors-and-electrical-equipment#section-4-1-1
But funnily I cannot find anything that says that amber markers are OK, probably because they only work when the sidelights/headlights are on, but that IS well weird.
Hi Stan, yeah yellow was also OK to the front. When I used to be a class 2 tester (motorcycles) we used to get the odd American spec bikes in for mot which had 21/5 stop & tail lamp bulbs in the front indicators & the 5w side as you say lit up with the side or h/l on but it would fail due to showing orange light to the front so we just disconnected the wire to the 5w side of the bulb & passed it I then explained to the customer what to do if they wanted it lit after it left the testing station;). I asked the previous owner of mine as he'd had it from new & he said the marker lights never worked like they do now:) (after I fitted bulbs & connected the wiring). Looking at mine you can see orange light from the front but mainly from the side & as @Interceptorxj says HGV's have orange marker lights on the side which is to do with the length of vehicle I think? So not sure what the law states about the D2's but I know the construction & use act the police use differs from mot regs but I won't be losing sleep over it:):):). All the best.

Yeah orange on the side is fine & to do with the length of a vehicle ? I'm probably wrong though;):). As I said to Stan mine too passed the mot with the marker lights working (after I'd fitted bulbs & connected the wiring)!

Yes but the D2 ones although in the front indicator pod are actually facing to the side in it so would imagine that is how they passed the construction regs.
To be a bit pedantic, they shine out the corner so to the front and the side at the same time.
I'll only worry if my MOT tester fails them but he ain't since I bought it in 2014!

You're right orange light is visible from head on but in the unlikely event of it failing you just pull the wiring connectors off. I'll have to keep an eye out now & see how many D2's have them connected :).

Disco failed its MOT today, but was no mention of the marker lights, my local garage seems quite thorough as they find all kind of things,so they must have thought they were alright bring lit.

Yes they are factory fit so meet the construction and use regs.
