Dear All,

I have just returned to Sweden after picking up a 2004 D2 TD5 Auto Diff Lock in Holland. I drove it back and all went pretty well. The TD5 did nine hundred kilometres smooth and cool.

The previous owner removed the centre silencer of the exhaust system and I think it is way to loud. It causes a reverbration in the cabin and after 900k I almost had tinnitus. I like a quieter ride as I want to hear the car operating and to be able to talk to the passenger.

I plan to install a central silencer again and would like your advice. Should I install the original factory silencer or another type of silencer such as a straight through model? Which silencer will provide the quietest solution?

In addition what else do I need to consider when replacing this component such as sensors etc?

Some additional information that may help. The engine has been stage 2 tuned, a larger intercooler installed and a sports down pipe placed on the exhaust system.

(I have updated the post with 4 pictures of each stage of the exhaust system from front to back).

Any advice you can offer would be gratefully appreciated.

Kind regards

The cat is on the down pipe, the centre box is separate. Has the cat been removed?
I removed the centre box on my Defender and kept the cat, removal of centre box barely made any difference to noise levels.

Thanks for your post. Sometimes when you commence a thread you hope the info you provide will elicit the desired response however, in my case it just highlights how much information I had failed to include

The centre box has been removed and as to the existance or non existance of a catalytic converter, picture one shows a device on the pipe which may or may not be a catalytic converter. Please feel free to enlighten me as another comment in here states there is no cat on a TD5! I honestly dont know but assume one is necessary for European emissions control.

I think the sound You are describing is called droning, not 100% sure of the term.

I have a stainless system on my 2003 TD5 without the center silencer, only the rear present.

And yeah, the noise is quite loud in the car when driving around 2000rpm, which is the most on my daily use.

Rather than adding the center silencer (I do have a unused V8 silencer leftover from my 2004 V8), I think I'm going the way of adding silencing material to the floors etc on the D2. AND at some point remove the rear silencer also.

The engine on the car has been tuned and a larger intercoller installed. I have been informed the the HP has been significently increased. I am therefore concerned if I add the original centre silencer will this somehow interfere with the performance. Would a straight through slencer be a more suitable solution to maintain performance while reducing the "droning" effect.

I am not experienced with exhaust system structures or performance. Any insight or advice is welcome.

Regards

I don't recall seeing a center silencer that is a flow through model, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't exist.
Ofcourse You can just cut and weld one in if You want to (or have ssomeone do it for You).

People who make the tunes ask for the specs of the car for the tune and one question is about the center silencer and is it still on.
I suppose you don't have the EGR either on anymore if the intercooler has been upgraded.

This is the EGR at the end of the intake manifold

Here is a picture of the engine. It appears in comparison to the picture you have sent that the EGR has been removed.

Hi, i fitted straight through exhaust to mine and the noise difference is neglectable, i can drive on the motorway and hear the radio at low volume and can have a chat with the passenger without raising my voice. If your's is so noisy i doubt that a center silencer will help very much... better fit the engine's acoustic cover back and do some sound deadening with Kilmat 80 or similar in the cabin if you want auditive confort... eventually try a new rear silencer

BTW is it loud the same if you rev it up stationary too?

I updated my initial post to add the engine modifications that have been made. The engine has been stage 2 tuned, had a larger intercooler and sports downpipe installed. From the first moment I test drove the car I felt the distinct difference in noise levels compared to the D2 V8 I had previously. This car was loud and drones. It is louder than the V8 when idling. When accelerating the volume increases.

The acoustic cover is on the engine, I just removed it for the benefit of that specific photo.

Its twofold really, reduce the sound emission and remove the droning.

If You want to clean up thje engine bay a little, You can remove that EGR cooler infront of the engine.
In addition to removing it You need two plugs to plug a coolant line.

On the oilcooler under the exhaust manifold and the other on the botton of the coolant expansion tank.
Hose marked with the arrow is taken off and replaced with a 18mm plug

And the hose from bottom of the expansion tanks is removed and a 8mm plug is the one here if I remember correct.

I stand corrected.

I would have known this if I would have atleast once opened the menu on the classic parts page I linked myself :vb-redface:
You can see it in the photo of your exhaust. Can't imagine it would be of much benefit now or ever really.
Keep thinking about removing mine but it is actually illegal to do so now, will carry on thinking about it for now.

If the the vehicle is that noisy and the exhaust isnt leaking then the missing centre box need replacing.

The noise thats generated in the combustion chambers has to be silenced somehow, hence the important exhaust muffler/centre box even a sports system has one, although the inside is redesigned and its not “straight through” it still has bends, baffles and wadding inside and specially tuned for the vehicle, so the exhaust gasses will exit quicker, also there’s the dark art of correct back pressure involved.

Then on to the muffler/tail box which also importantly tunes the sound of exhaust gasses exiting the tail pipe.

Fitting a sports system to a factory engine you should find it more responsive as I have done with a Janspeed Cat-back system for my disco, but no other changes were found other a deeper exhaust tone at the same volume as the old factory system but it wasn’t for the first 200 odd miles) so no issues with MOTs 😊

With another car I own, a sports exhaust plus a cam and cylinder head change also showed a very good increase in performance throughout.🙂
