had this disco now for 20 odd years galved it alll that time ago had 3 classic shells on it then started putting dicsco 1 on it as could not source any classics r/r any more im now back at the the same hurdel as cant get any decent dico 1 shells so i noww going to put disco 2 shell on i have just bought a cracker td5 es auto full leather ect 90000 genuine miles on it engine sweet as so going to use the shell for mine
just a thought i have a couple of manual td5 gearboxes so could make it manual has any one done this i mean putting td5 engine and box in to 300 tdi
or am i better sticking to the 300 engine ??thoughts inputs ect

I believe there is at least one other on here doing the same thing. Certainly an interesting idea!

Sure from the other post the only issue was a rear body mount needing to be extended, plus the wiring obviously.

yes im aware its longer and you have to fab something for the rear bumper but I will manage I have a body sitting off a d2 at the moment that I will use to see what fits and dosent fit before I take the body off the es I have its still moted till next year I want to use the 300 tdi as there bullet proof but the td5 I got has only done 90000 mls and is perfect but had at least 4 for breaking with bad engines so don't know what engine to use ???
would like to see what people have done the job already and what they would advise mike

I think if you're considering keeping the TD5 then you may as well keep the whole D2 and scrap/sell the D1, otherwise I'm not sure what you're achieving by doing the swap. You may run into more issues with the DVLA etc if you swap the engine too but you probably already know all that.

not interested in keeping d2 I want to reshell my disco1 chassis as galvied 20 odd years ago and no issues ive had d2 and there just fall to bits chassis anyway cant get any decent d1 shells so hence the rason for d2 shell I was asking if anyone had done the td5 into the 300 chassis and there opinions
as the d2 had only done 90000 this will prob be the last shell on this disco 1 chassis so I will most likely keep the 300 tdi in the d1 chassis and sell the d2 chassis and engine and box rolling

D2 body on a D1 rolling chassis has been done a few times.

If it was me, I would keep the 300tdi engine.

Cheers

I'm sure it can be done as it's only the rear end thats slightly different from a mounting perspective. The D2 also doesn't have the seat belt tie rod mounts, they are integral to the body. I'm sure the main difference is the 4 mounting points on the rear end, which alot of people tell me they just fabriate new mounts (or cut them off the old one)

done got the body of last night took engine and box out this morning just to give more room I have laid a body on as a template to see what fits and what needs sorting all body mounts mate up the rear ones on the d1 chassis sit lower so needs a spacer made up and a bigger bolt I can see the rear bumper needs minor work to sort the as you mentioned the undr side mounts the 4 tie down seatbelt ones and differ but easy to make some mounts weld on sorted I would like to speak to someone who has already done this I woiuld like to know how they put throttle pedal in and also couple other issues but all in all seems simple

Keep a grinder to your left, A welder to your right, & just go for it.

I remember years ago, lowering engines into position with the mountings already fixed to the block, position it up& weld them in.
I must admit, never done a whole body, but the principle is the same.
When you get that CAN DO atittude, anything is possible.

cheers mate
that's how I started to put engine and boxes in line them up then tack make sure alls good them weld full saves a lot of measuring

to make the Td5 engine to run well you need the whole main harness and associated computers connected ECM, BCU, ABS ECU connected to sensors cos the TD5 engine management needs the immonbiliser unlock code and VSS(vehicle speed signal) to not go to default + the D2 dash as to have tachometer and warning lights... IMO it's very complicated

No it doesnt.

I have done a TD5 conversion into a D1 and all you need is the wiring loom that attaches to the ecu and the engine ecu.

You don't need the abs, bcu etc. JUST the engine ECU

You can get it deimmobilized

I can understand that it can be deimmobilised but what did you do with the VSS which is integral part of the overall addaptive strategy and how did you manage with the tachometer and speedometer? you can't make a D2 dash to work without BCU ... i sustain that it's very complicated IF you want to do a perfect job eventually pass a MOT not some bodge as to have a running engine which works on management default with a permannent "road speed missing" or who knows what other fault codes logged also without a working dash

what happens if yu just supply power to the fuel pump, like the 300tdi? will it run?
not at all it has a complicated management

Shirley a doozil only needs fuel and air to run... all the rest is fine tuning and emission control?,
