Hey all... great to be here and join in the fun!!! need some help if you can !! Just bought a Japanese Import disco 1... V8i es 1997 model

I already have a 300tdi 1996 also!

The electronic key fobs are identical. On the tdi when I press the button to close the locks all the locks close and the hazzards flash 3 times....ie the imoboliser and alarm activate.

On the V8i only the doors lock with no hazzard light flashes does this mean that it isnt fitted with an alarm / immoboliser orwhat?

Would be great if anyone can advise me and I look forward to chatting with you all!

Hi Frag,

I also have a Jap import,a 1998 R plate 2.5 TDi which has the same set up
as you i.e. fob locks/unlocks doors as it should but no hazards flashing or
horn sounding.I did read somewhere that the Japs had a thing about noise
pollution etc etc and thats why you dont get hazards or horn.

My Disco has an aftermarket Toad immobiliser fitted but I'd like to know if
I can get either the hazards or horn to work in conjuction with the central
locking when using the fob so any ideas welcomed...........

Had a look today whilst swapping some stuff around and the V8i has no alarm siren fitted so looks like I'll have to get someone to fit an alarm!

More Cash!!!!!! Needed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAHHH
 
check up at the front on the V8i, between the two front sun visors (were the sunroof controls are).

You should see two microphone type things - if there then alarm is fitted, if not - yep you got it...

We have two 96 ES V8i, one has it one don't.

The one that doesn't was purchased in UK, then shipped out to West Indies, came back in 2004.

My 300tdi is from Japan and I had same problem. Took it to Rogers of Bedford who agreed there was no alarm but Insurance Co. insisted on it having at least a Thatcham 1 immobiliser. Couldn't find the sensor behind the ignition lock so garage assumed nothing was fitted and I had a new immobiliser fitted (£130). After fitting they did a full service and system check and found that the car did have an immobiliser (surprise surprise) and it could be reset. After that every time I locked the doors with the key fob the indicators flashed three times and flashed once when unlocked. Still no alarm but I now have two immobilisers. Point worth noting: the Jap frequencies for the key fob are different to the UK. I managed to get a spare no problem and it does help with security as less people are likely to have the same. :D
 
Yeah Thanks Donboon! I do use a keu fob to lock and unlock..

I presume the immoboliser works.

But no alarm!! no sensor above mirror or alarm horn in engine bay near battery.

Any suggestions as to an after market alarm fit?

do you know whereabouts the immobiliser was & how it was reset.
I would like to get the hazards to flash when locking / unlocking the car
using the fob.........any info/ideas greatly appreciated,

Frag DON'T assume the immobiliser is working. The sensor I'm talking about is a coil behind the rim where you insert your ignition key into the steering lock. If fitted it picks up the code in your key fob. If it's working you should see a small flashing LED light come on in the dash after you have removed the key. It has to time out before it comes on. If you have the light working it tells you that the immobiliser is switched on. Bringing the key fob close to the sensor switches it off. in case the lights not working try taking the fob of the key ring and leave it well away from the steering lock (5 meters) If you can still start your engine then the immobiliser is not working. The immobiliser is part of the ECU and can be switched on or off. In my case the immobiliser had been selected off but I didn't know about that at the time. so the garage tells me that I don't have an immobiliser and I purchased one and had it fitted. I chose the model with a little capsule on the key ring and everytime I bring it close to the steering lock it switches of the immobiliser. It worked perfect so I then had the car fully serviced. Having finished the service the mechanic suddenly decides that he can reset the ECU to make the OE immobiliser work as well. Fancy that, it did have one after all. Now when I operate the key fob the indicator lights flash to show that it is operating but it also indicates the state of the fob battery. (3 flashes is good- 1 flash not so good). I now have the OE immobiliser working AND the aftermarket one. You need a LR dealer with fault finder to reset the OE unit, not cheap (about 0.75 hour) There are several approved Thatcham units (1 is immobiliser only and 2 is immobiliser with alarm). Hi,

I have an aftermarket TOAD immobiliser fitted (by the previous owner)
with the fob on the keyring which stops the immobiliser LED on top of the
steering wheel cowling flashing when in close proximity.I will have to check
for the coil that you mention to see if I have a factory fitted immobiliser
as well. If I have a factory fitted one then it's definitely a dealer job to get it reset. If I dont have one fitted does anyone know if / how I could get the indicators to flash when locking/unlocking the car???

It would make sense to get the OE unit working first however if you cant you could use a simple solution. Buy any aftermarket alarm system that causes the horn or lights to operate when triggered. To connect it to the lights you must make certain that the voltage doesn't get back to the cars electronics. This can be done by fitting diodes or relays. It depends on how competent you are with electrics. If you want to know how to do it just reply to this.

Sorry I forget to mention. Normally there is a coil fitted to the ignition rim but there wasn't one on my car but that doesn't stop the dealer from resetting the ECU to recognise your aftermarket unit when its operated. Your aftermarket unit may not fit a coil in the same place as the OE so don't be surprised if you don't find one. When I said I had two immobilisers fitted what I meant was this.
The aftermarket unit works completely independantly however, once the ECU is reset it will operate with the aftermarket unit and does its own immobilising as well as operating the indicator lights. Hope all is clear now.

seems a bit odd why a car with a standard fit immobiliser should have an after market one fitted as well?
maybe the original one is duff, and thats why theres another one installed?

just thinking out loud here.

I dont know if it has an OE immobiliser fitted.It is a Jap import
& I believe that either Car Equality,the company who imported it back here
or the new owner fitted the TOAD immobiliser.

Your Jap import is most likely to have the same setup as mine. It's the ECU that does the immobilising. Its designed to operate automatically after you remove the key and after so many seconds delay. When you put the key back in and turn on the ignition it disarms the immobiliser. If someone tries to hotwire your engine without the key it should still be immobilised. I won't go into what it does because others might work out how to disarm it. As an extra safeguard they fitted a coil behind the ignition switch which meant that you had to have the decoder (inside the key fob) next to the coil when you operated the ignition switch otherwise it wouldn't disarm the immobiliser. With this extra security pulling the ignition barrel to turn on the ignition wouldn't allow the immobiliser to be disarmed. Your key fob will have a decoder in it and if you had the coil fitted the dealer could match the codes and activate that part of the immobiliser again. Retro fitting a new coil and upgrading the system is likely to be more expensive than purchasing an aftermarket system. Finally. one of the operations in the ECU can be set (optional) to give you indicator lights when you operate the key fob. It's purely an indication of the state of the security and fob battery.

i have the same problem no flashing lights when locked and dash light dosent come on but with jap imports i think you will find the ecu has been swithed off because of the motion sensor on the alarm as it will keep going off when it is being transported on the ship
 
As it happens my import didn't have a factory alarm fitted when I got it. Japs aren't too keen on them. That's why I fitted an aftermarket system.
