Yup. Was close to buying a high spec, off road modded 1999 for £3K which vendor says cost £2500 in quality welding this year. Yet a subsequent MOT has an advisory on chassis rot close to rear shocker! Makes me think its rear chassis is shot and will need annual money for MOT. Am reluctantly prepared to spend much more for a good one, or much less for a high spec bad one and sort it. Busy life makes former better than latter.
 
a friend has an early D2 (td5 thing) and it's just had it's first welding - on the drivers front floor / A pillar area:confused:

admittedly he has oiled the chassis sufficiently over the last 10+ years he's owned it:cool:

otherwise it's been normal servicing and mantanance....

what about a JDM re-import ? virtually no rust guaranteed - until it comes back here :D - but it could be properly waxed before the tin worms got in ;)
Yes, I will look into that. Or could get a fairly good o e for now, search for a keeper, and if I find o e, sell it again
