40 seems to be a bit of a lie given that the best figures possible are 35 IIRC unless it was all downhill!

300tdi auto between 20-25 on the motorway doing 70 ish and under 20 on a short run to work and back on cold mornings.I had a go at working it out once over a week , but really couldnt be arsed as its a 2 ton landrover and wasnt designed for economical driving .

No, people say that, but you don't want to be wasting the juice in it either :)

I must admit that I don't mind burning propane in my outback because it's a sporty drive, but the disco really isn't. I prefer to drive it like a luxury tractor :)

Have you got one of those inserts in your air intakes that swirls the air in to a vortex? Guaranteed 10mpg extra!

They quote over 40mpg on a 56mph run in the 200tdi manual owners manual. Auto might be another matter but a lot of these figures are from manual boxes :)

200's have better mpg than 300's. Because LR ****ed about with the 300's to try and get em thru the draconian new emissions tests that the EU was gonna be introducing. But then they never arrived. So egr & Particulate filters were a waste of fooking time and money

The way I look at it , is that yes it does use a lot of diesel but weigh that up against the wide availability and relatively cheap cost of parts compared to other manufacturers ( I own an old j*** so I know!) and that the only garage bill I pay out for has been for an m.o.t. every year.

Just £2000 of welding each year then? :p

and theres nowt quite as obnoxious as a dickhead who thinks he knows it all when he obviously dont.

to be fair i didnt believe it either the first time i worked it out, but twas there in black and white .

but you beleive what you want , makes no difference to me.

Not if you buy a mig welder... a little bit here, and a little bit there..whenever another bit needs doing. :)

In all seriousness though, if I couldn't weld and do my own mechanics then there's no way I would own a disco of the age I do. I would never recommend one to anyone who couldn't do the same either. The fact that I can keep it on the road cheaply with cheap parts etc makes it a great vehicle for me personally though :)

To be fair, the auto torque convertor locks up at 52, so why shouldn't it do the same as the manual at around about peak torque on a long run ? :)
