2004 TD5 - 136K

On changing my front diff with EP90 I noticed there was a small spring 70mm long and about 2mm dia- landy does not seem bothered. Anybody had the same issue?

Also, rear diff is still producing silver waste oil. Looks like silver paint. Some metal on plug, but nothing major. Anybody no if the INTERNALS are lined with silver paint that maybe flaking off?

That silver paint effect is bits of steel being ground off something inside, mine did that for a bit then shat the rear diff, might be worth changing it again soon so you get an idea of how bad the wear rate is.

Changed it 1200k ago, seems worse this time. Shall I run it untill it goes bang or look at replacing diff?

What are the costs involved? looks like a garage job.

I had a rear diff out in less time than it took to boil the kettle. I mean that literally. I do run a garage and have airtools and a ramp but it really is easy to change a rear diff. If you've got steel wheels you don't even need to jack it up. Used diffs can be picked up for £50 or less.

Make 2 or 3 changes in quick succession. As DiscoPol says the silver effect is caused by metal content. The problem is, the presence of metal in the oil accelerates the wear rate. So even when you change the oil, whats left inside will start the breakdown all over again. Consider getting wheels off the ground in order to turn diff by hand. Keep flushing and turning til theres no more silver visible. Consider using a flushing agent that you can get cheaper than diff oil. You'll get more life of your diff that way if you dont want to change it.

Guys, currently looking at a few options -

1. salvaged diff with 89k on it (90 days warranty) £100.
2. NEW DIFF BRITPART DELIVERD £454 (not really an option)
3. fleabay used diff £100 (30 day warranty)

Incidentally, local garage will fit for £150.

The diff is getting a bit noisey so I will have to bite the bullet.

Currently, undecided on best route.

How much that is defo a job you can do yourself, it is a piece of cake, honestly mate an hour to 2 tops with basic tools and a tube of silicon.
