this is what i was worried about :mad: it the H patten as said above. . now can i hit it in with a hammer? or do i need to do this properly?

pervious owner was a old couple who used it for caravaning and it was difficult to get it into lows :(

try on flat ground
idle, in drive, slowly roling forward. in low range

with a bit of efort push the lever to the left


no go try again in reverce

if there is no clunk oir grinding of gears, or movent of lever uumm = $$$$

mate im not in pommy land, but with kit, and nothing is broken say 4 - 6 hours work with a mate

pommy land? just tried thing drivin forward slow thing. think i heard a little gear grindin and it moved a little wee bit to the left. . gonna be a case of just tryin carefully to do this

yepp keep at it, nice and slow, if theres any noise like gears wanting to mesh, stop, put the auto in nutral and try again, thay usally go in with a nice clunk, but haveing said that my 51KG wife cant shift it so there is a bit of efort required

any one else got any tips on freeing up my diff lock, i can feel that it moves to the left now, but it just wont budge that way. . would chaning the oil in the box help??
 
Get under it and wd40 all the linkages and jiggle it all about. It's probably never been used and just needs freeing off.

Hi Snow I just been reading this thread and would like to try and clarify a little.

The small gear lever controls two separate but associated functions:

1. High & low ratios on the gearbox &

2. Locking the centre differential. This can be used in both high and low ratios. Move to left to put into difflock anda light should light up on the dashboard.

The centre difflock function is used in slippery conditions and what it does, when selected, it to apportion power equally to the front and rear axles.

This will not neccesarily stop you getting stuck. If you imagine soft stuff down the right hand side and firm stuff down the left, the front and rear diffs will allow drive power to the wheels on the soft stuff and so they spin.

Basic fundemental bad design - very few 4 wheel drives can lock all three diffs, the only one that comes to mind is the Merc G wagon.

The Japs approach this differently, they offten put a limited slip diff at the rear, to help with drive.

I love my Landys, but only being able to lock the centre diff, on a std 4x4 world renown vehicle, is crap !!!!

sort of get under on the left had side, ill have a look in the morning its 10pm here and - 15 at the moment, and for the life of me i just cant picture the linkages, changing the oil will not do any thing,
you can be quite hard on it, im 6'3" and 120kg, and i doint think i could bend or damange it. mabe pulling from the passanger side, some thing like that, try moving it when its in nutral etc

hmm ive tried passanger side. . . not the biggest person in the world might try and find someone big to try this. . . other wise i can get it fixed for £40-£60 +vat over here so might just do that!

yea not best design. . .just hope i get it free, dont wanna spend money on it!!

Hey Biglad, I bought my Disco without a manual too and was told that difflock was engaged when low ratio was engaged i.e that the ratio selection lever only moved forwards and backwards (it's bloody stiff too!). Is my 300 different to Snow's 200, or should I also have a left movement to engage difflock?

well ive been onto my local landy specialist and they are going to have a look at it. . .ive got a 200tdi but with the 300tdi engine in dont think the gear box or transfer box where changed, im still kinda convinced it dont move left lol
 
I'd suggest anyone who's not sure how all this stuff works get hold of an owners manual for their particular vehicle. It explains it all very clearly.

If my memory serves me correctly it also tells you on the knob what it does in each position doesn't it??

In this respect the 200 and 300 are identical IF they are both manual gearboxes.

The smaller lever should be able to slide to the left irrespective of high or low gears. If it doesn't then it's seized up.

I know people that talk about spraying WD-40 from underneath but to be honest the centre is so easy to remove and you get so much better access, that I would suggest going that route, then you can easily get to the component in question and a; free it off and then b; give it a good greasing.
 
If anyone wants to know how to operate/drive a defender as well as basic maintenance & servicing info I have hosted this file, which they're welcome to landrover_onroad_response.pdf It's Sussex fire brigades instruction manual for their defender fire tenders, and is aimed at their staff who may not be used to driving defenders so it's fairly idiot proof.
