I'm sorry guys but this topic is not for jacking up wheels and checking if center diff is lock or not.
Please give me a clue what to do with mine!
Jamesmartin after Christmas I'll check what you said!

From memory it will never work. If I'm not mistaken from late 2001 to 2004 d2's didn't have the internals for diff lock. I have a early 2001 which I fitted a d1 kit too and it works perfectly.

I think you would have to fit an early 2001 or late 2004 transfer box for it work.

Some more info

To be 100% sure if you have the diff lock spigot, simply crawl under your Disco from the drivers side, once you see the front universal joint at the transfer case, simply reach up onto the transfer case and if you have the diff lock spigot (hardware inside) then you will be able to "feel" it. The picture above shows a view from above looking down onto the transfer case from inside the car to give you an idea of exactly where it is.

Even if you don't have the diff lock hardware inside your transfer case, it is possible to add the "internal" bits required, although this will add to the cost significantly and is not covered in this article.

To determine if you have the option to enable the diff lock you must find out if your transmission has a 41D or 42D prefix on its serial number. For those of you that have the Land Rover parts catalogue, this can seen in the "vehicle details" section as you load up the Microcat parts IPC with your vehicle reg No, or chassis ident number.

As a "rough" guide, Land Rover Discovery 2's up to approx March 2001 will most likely have the diff lock hardware in the transfer case and will require just the factory, or an electronic linkage to enable it. We will look at the options later on. Below is a link to a small Video that will show where the Transfer Box Identifier is actually located on the case

Hello!
I have a 2003 Disco 2 facelift with center diff lock mounted on the transfer box but without linkage. I bought from a Disco 1 the linkage and mounted it on my car but here comes the problem: CENTER DIFF WON'T LOCK !?!? The CDL light won't come on.

I put my lever on the left (where the cdl is engaged) and lift the front left wheel and it's spin so the center diff it's not locked.

What can I do? What might be the problem? I don't know where to start fixing the problem?!?!

Lever should go over to the RIGHT to engage difflock, looking down from the top it should go clockwise 1/4 turn.It will go the other way but you wont have difflock.

No it doesn't.

To engage difflock you need to move the transfer box hi-lo selector lever to the left, (assuming it's got it) to engage difflock.

If there is an spigot on the t-box then it should have the internals if not then Land Rover's engineers are idiots but I'm preaty sure they are not.

The spigot is turning on the left 1/4 turn. The linkage is working perfectly.

My T-box is a 41D and I'm attaching an image with it.

thats why i mentioned removing the 3 bolts and looking as it wasnt unknown in the past

Hi, I have fiddled with my spigot today as I want to buy a linkage. As looking from above it was fully clockwise, however if I turned it anti clockwise I managed to turn it 360 degrees and it still didnt stop, is this right or wrong? I didnt go any further as its a bit arkward on your back reaching above the t/case to turn a spanner with not much room!!
So, should it come to a stop when turning?

There seems to be some confusion here.

The arm that attaches to the spigot that sticks out of the transfer box turns CLOCKWISE about a quarter.

The above picture shows the diff lock engaged, with the cable extended.

When the gear lever is pulled back accros to the RIGHT, the cable shortens and the diff lock is dissengaged.

From the unlocked position, the spigot can be turned anti clockwise a " click ", but this doesnt do anything.

Cheers.

might be worth undoing the 3 bolts holding the shaft in the box its not unusual for lever on bottom of shaft to come out of the cut out in selector shaft ,it can be restraightened

Should I try a little more force clockwise first? Also, as silly as it sounds I can get spigots mixed up can I? There are no other spigots up there??!!

I will try and take a picture tomorrow. But from feeling it, it feels as if there is no threaded part on the top of the flat sided spigot.

Problem sorted. Was winding me up so had a torch lit look under the car. I may have been looking on top of the gearbox cos I found the right one on the transfer case now but I havent turned it yet. But what the hell have I been turning on top of the gearbox?!!!!!

Hi Ropoly
Is your d2. D or v8? My 03 v8 does not have a diff.lock fitted.I herd that there was such a demand for face lift diesels that the v8 got forgotten!?!?.Do you really need it.
Regards Mike

Hey!
Mine is Td5 and it has the spigote need it for locking the diff.
And YES I need it so bad doing off road! I don't like to push the car very hard but without it sometimes I need more momentum to pass.
So with CDL on you can take more care of you Landy ;) if you know what i mean.
Plus - your TC will work less - better for you breaking system

Diff lock linkage from Ashcroft fitted yesterday. Shame the snow wasn't deep enough to try it out properly!!
Just got to fix the damn rod inside the handbrake that goes to the button, reading on the forums I think I must have bent it inside when the ratchet went over limit and flipped inside out when removing the centre console!!

Thats exactly right. The little arm with the teeth on that engages the ratchet gets forced over on itself when the handbrake is pushed back down after its been pulled right up.

Just got to flick it back over with a screw driver.
