its all very well the blokes fallin about and takin the **** but someone at sometime showed them or taught them how to do it ( actually thinking about it i think some of them were born just knowing- its in the dna !)
im on my 3rd defender- 14 years and although i kind of understand in theory about the diff lock ive never had anyone show me and therefore dont feel comfortable using it.
so when the urge to take the **** becomes too strong for some of u to cope with please remember that not all of us have a handy landy bloke about to just "know" how to do it

there's numerous excellent explanations all over the net that you could have read if you really wanted to know how it worked
