ok, the only prob i can see with the first design with having it sit away slob is that it will just create a bigger pocket for the water to sit in, what if i could take the first design and just have a lip sitting against the guard and the rest angled away with a drain hole in the bottom? only prob there that springs to mins is there will be minimal contact and grip from the guard to the axel and yer stand more chance of it being knocked off. think a rubber seal between the 2 components will prob be the best bet.
 
Raz - that is how it is designed - it clamps around the bottom flange and the "bucket sits away from the dif - hence filling up with mud. there is a drain hole at the bottom, but that doesnt stop water leaching between the clamping parts and, as said before, its the mud that is the problem - it doesnt drain out through the drain hole and just sits in there, festering!

the second design is, i believe, for salisbury axles, not the rover ones.

so you think if a second option diff for the salisbury axles could be made for a rover axle it would be a good idea??
what i meant about the first design was, if i had one with a slight egg in the bottom it would allow better drainage??
 
reet , how about you make a diffguard outta 1/2" or perhaps3/8" rod, bit like a light guard. That way its very unlikey that the mud would stay around long
 
would take away too much ridgidity wouldnt it slob? did look at that but its alot more labour intesive as i would have to be like a grid pattern and i doubt anyone would want to pay inflated prices. from what i can gather people dont jump out and get a set as it is cause its gonna sting them 60 for a new pair.
 
the obvious answer would be to make the diff pan more substantial in the first place - or have a "heavyweight" diff pan. I havent tried it - but i think the "Salisbury" guard will fit the Rover axle too.
 
would work pretty well me thinks....could use 10 or 12mm re-bar [wot is used to reinforce concrete]. plenty strong enough and would also b quick and easy to repair.

its a crappy idea...will never work....putting a damned bird cage around yer diff....next he'll be saying put a budgie in the cage ta protect the diff...:rolleyes: ....sum people i tell ya!!

or if you have the gear(if not local engineering place will).. just have the guard drilled in sevel place's(basicly slobs idea but useing what you have at hand)
 
so a standard diff but with holes on the front of it near the bottom? big clumps of mus would still sit in though wouldnt it? thought thats what we are trying to eliminate.
 
given that people are prepered to get under to give i thorough blast off then yer but otherwise it couls still do as much damaged as an origional for holding **** in. the big quiestion is would you be prepered to pay that bit extra for getting one with a drainage system??

if they aint prepared to get under and give it a blast with a washer then the diff would end up full of crud wether a diff gaurd's fitted or not,

however as bushtoy said it would make washing it out a lot easier and bigger hole's mean bigger bits of ****e wash out easier and not just clog up the standerd drain hole..
