My 2002 TD4 (125k miles) has started to sound louder recently. More diesel knock than normal. With this it seems a little down on power and a bit lazier to start. I think that it is trying to tell me something !

Serviced regularly and with EGR by-pass, cyclone breather and recent (1 year ago) new high pressure pump.

Any ideas ?

I notice with supermarket fuel it is a bit more rattly, stick with one of the better suppliers if you can't live with it.
 
never use super market fuel, high water content, no detergent its ****, even a bad batch of premium fuel with low tanks and high condensation ie summer can cause problems, buy the best you can afford.
Definetly sounds like youve got **** fuel problems
 
shell diesel v power ..or normal shell plus redex..but dont use crap supermarket fuel..why think its cheap..the norm argument is..but it comes from same refinary..maybe but it wonthave ..any...additives in it
 
Question is if supermarket diesel is so poor by your descriptions why hasn't landrover demand major fuel distributers only. I use Morrisons regular and had no issue yet with my TD4 2002. Certainly I would happily use the good stuff but in North Manchester it more hunt for the retailer.

Think every body agrees supermarket fuel so cheap for a reason it has little or no additives in it , thats a fact readily admitted, and a lot of older cars with less technical engines run ok on it, its personal choice, if any one is happy using it..fine . if on other hand like me quite happy to use a premium fuel thats fine

a good percentage of the public run on it with no problems
 
On the occasions when the only garage in my area which has diesel is an Asda one, I can definitely notice the difference in how the FL runs.
Less mpg also.
 
For what it's worth, when I first got the car in 2004 (at 44 000 km) I used supermarket fuel exclusively. Maybe a couple three years later I had a lift fuel pump go out on me, and the local LR garage (Dijon) recommended replacing both of them as a precaution. They told me at the time to not use supermarket fuel, so I went exclusively to premium fuel (Total Excellium). Recently however the same garage (different shop foreman) said it wouldn't matter whether I used supermarket fuel or not; back when I made the switch my mileage went up and the engine seemed to run better anyway so I've never looked back.
 
The amazing thing is that people skimp on fuel, if theres any chance of supermarket fuel doing harm..i wont use it , now maybe ive wasted a few pennies over time but who cares, keeps me happy and its my money
 
Surely, they wouldn't be allowed to sell fuel unless it is up to a certain standard and therefore won't cause any harm to an engine.
It might affect economy but surely it cannot damage an engine.
 
Its more about buying whats best for your engine, thousands of cars run on supermarket fuel lot of engines ecu adjust to suit, but with injectors the most important thing is the spray pattern and that depends on them being kept clean, premium fuel has cleaners and additives in , put in by shell ect and it costs more,
i think of it like this ..mon my car is having a new crank pulley..damper failed ..known fault , now i can get ..aftermarket 60 quid or genuine 130...ive gone for genuine,..also replacing belts and tensioner...im doing what i think is in best interest of the car..same as fuel..i use premium
 
I use Shell V Power in my D3. There's a definite improvement when using V Power compared to supermarket fuels. It's more responsive, quieter running and more efficient. I can imagine the benefits of V Power would be noticed on the TD4 too.
 
I did try a tank of Shell premium diesel (Or whatever it was called) on my TD4 a couple of years ago and couldn't detect any difference so I went back to bog standard Shell diesel.
 
never used supermarket even in petrol cars i have a shell 1 mile away so always used that, when got the landy i decided on v power nitro
