i run my td4 on shell v max all the time ,then one time whilst on holiday had to use supermarket special , the difference was incredible it was noisier less power, less smooth , v max imo is better but you need a couple of tankfulls to get the full benefits .
 
This is what makes me laugh had this argument in the pub and 2 guys were saying premium fuels a rip off and they need to save where they can on running costs so i asked them what would they do if fuel got to 28 quid a gallon and answer was ..have to sell the car..never afford it, they were shocked when i pointed out that diesel is now under fiver a gallon but the lager they drink at 3.60 a pint is 28 quid a gallon yet they binge on it least twice a week, you see men sometimes are quite a stupid race and illogical to say the least, wont hesitate spending 28 quid per gallon lager and moan like hell about a few pennies more for fuel that..may..preserve there beloved car..odd world eh..ps..ive never had an hangover after filling me car up on premium fuel

Same with my D3. The difference between V Power and supermarket stuff is instantly noticeable if I have to use the cheap stuff at a fill up. Going the other way, the improvement is more progressive and not instantly noticeable.

I used to add 2 stroke oil or some other fuel improver to diesel. However I now just use V POWER as it's a few pence per litre more, does the same thing as using 2 stroke without the cost or messing about measuring the stuff.
I've converted to V Power as my main fuel now, especially as there's a Shell station only a mile away.
 
There does seem to be a bit of a difference in supermarket vs premium, but it's quite interesting.

On petrol:
My first car used to run like a three legged dog on ASDA fuel, put it in once because it was cheap and it just freaked out.
The difference in the K powered cars between cheap crap and premium is something like 20% engine noise - the 18K16 doesn't have knock sensors on it so has to be mapped for high ron and low ron fuel. I imagine it won't make a power/economy difference though because it's not capable of remapping itself back to the good stuff, I just put it in to shut it up.
If I go near a Tesco petrol station I'll always put their premium stuff in - it runs a LOT quieter, and I seem to remember WHICH did a rolling road of a lot of fuels to see if their claims could be substantiated. Tesco's 99 stuff was the only premium one in the test that made a difference iirc.
On a long run the premium would add about 50 miles to a tank on the old 5.0 V12, so was always worth buying.

On my old Seat Altea diesel, the premium stuff always used to get you a lot more in the way of smoothness.
 
The KV6 runs better on premium and having knock sensors can remap it's self to use the extra octane.
My diesel D3 is better on fuel with V Power in the tank. This compensates up for the extra cost.
 
The OP said he was hearing more 'diesel knock' fro his engine. This could just be a faulty injector or maybe more than one.
 
We always try to put decent fuel in our 06 TD4 but sometimes have to fill up at Morrisons. Every time we do it runs lumpy from cold and puffs white smoke when starting. The supermarket stuff lasts nowhere near as long. Filled up with Texaco premium the other day and went from Devon to North Yorkshire for £32. Can't be bad for any 4x4. When we can we always put BP Ultimate in, Freelander is much less noisy and more responsive when we do.
 
hi folks ..ive always avoided supermarket fuel to be honest, todays up to date engines deserve a bit more, so i use shell v power, whats the views on reddex lads

i put redex in the tank 2/3 times a year,it seems to be ok,
my old disco 300tdi i used to put a couple of litres of petrol
in with a full tank of diesel,the petrol cleaned the injectors
& i could always feel the difference in power & running.
 
how about Texaco diesel, has anyone tried it, only asking as it's closer to me than a shell garage.

almost my favourite ..
i usually fill up at one about 5 miles from home .. new place .. spot taken over from BP at some stage
hippo runs well on their fuel .. i use their regular diesel 'n add my chosen additive ..

be a closer one to me .. prices are higher .. place looks shoddy .. filled up there once
and the auto-stop on the pump were not functioning .. got a nice splashing of fuel ..
so don't know how they'd be on maintaining their fuel equipment overall ..
also a crap place to enter 'n leave ..

i also use 'Jet' stations ( part of Phillips 66 )

as their fuel be from a fairly close refinery .. so fuel should be fresh ..
also talked to the manager about how often tanks are cleaned .. and about filters used on pumps ..
i use their regular fuel plus an additive of choice ..
