As mentioned in many threads already the BMW 6 cylinder diesel unit is a great engine but lacks power all through the rev range. Chips and Re-maps are the cheap and easy way of unleashing a few more HP's and ftlb's but does anyone know of anyone who has changed the turbo or intercooler on the P38, as i know you would be able to get 200hp from this engine as it has been done in the E34 BMW's in the past.
Any info on this would be great!!

That's something I was wondering about myself. There doesn't seem to be a lot of discussion on this in the Land Rover forums. I haven't looked at any of the BMW forums though.

I know from previous threads on polish and amercian forums that with a little knowledge and investment there is a lot more power available from the 6 cylinder oil burner. A roller bearing turbo for quick spool up and some adjustments on the intake and maybe some water injection would easily see 185-210hp. Some more food for thought would be to LPG the diesel engines, this would give a greater increase in torque compared to the petrol variants.

the intercooler is supposed to make a big difference when combined with a chip/exhaust.
i purchased a larger cooler for mine off eblag wich said fits all diesel p38's but when it came it said 01/04 on it. the guy said it came off a y plate 2001 mine is a 1999 and it would not go on mine :( wich is a pitty cos the 1 on me disco made a big difference with all the other mods.
the guy sells them new for £400.00 and owns a well known LR servicing garage in wales and never got back to me after numerous emails  so now im stuck with it :( im saving up for the exhaust and another cooler now ;)

i never even thought about the exhaust, what have you done? increased diameter and taken the cat out?

not yet! thats what i am saving for at the mo :D

1 of the guys on the DOC got is disco on lpg running at 8% and he says thats a nice increase but i dont want to go to that extreme.
im happy with it at the mo but thought the twin stainless exit exhaust looks the nuts from the rear on the ranger and as its chipped the cooler would just help along with both ;) at the end of the day its a diesel and the more power the more fuel :( i wish i could run a v8 but thats out the question with running around all the time and i like me boot space so does the dog so lpg out the question too lol

i already have about 200 bhp in my 99dhse with only two alterations
1)2001 vaux omega y25dts engine(standard 160bhp)
2)re mapped ecu extra 35 to 45bhp

400 quid for an intercooler not enough boost value
400 quid for an exhaust the same
500 for a bigger turbo thats still only going into the same size hole
makes for 1300 quid down the pan for not much difference
my opinion only

how much was your engine and re-map then
only joking lol
the cooler does make a difference not a lot but it does and the exhaust for me is more cosmetic but still makes a bit of a difference to bhp with getting the gasses out the back.

im happy with me motor but still nice to have that bit extra.
whats the omega engine like now then compared to your std 1?

Dawes device worked for me. £15 off e-blag and it goes much better than my 4.6 ever did. The sceptics among us will ask for how long no doubt but engines arent that expensive, I'd rather be searching for a diesel engine than a 4.6.;)

More info please?????
What are the differences between the Omega and RR engines?

Hi! First post here!!

I have been modifing my Range Rover DSE, in quest for more power, as it is a Automatic and was quite slow.

First, just to clear a thing Opel and Land Rover engines are the same. ( the engine of the 325 td, with a different turbo, the Mitsubishi TD04 hence more power, but not the sabe as the 325tds as the boost is inferior as is the fueling, and different turbo...)

200hp out of the BMW engine, only with large cooler... so any claims that say the diferent only with dyno charts... Sorry!

Mine, has about 170hp ( real ). Cylinder compreesion OK, new filters, oil etc....

I have reprogrammed it (325 tds + 15% curves), and up the turbo boost ( from 1.2 to 1.4 BAR ) and on the road i use a KN.

Next change will be an BIG intercooler. I have been wondering if the difference is that noticeable... anyone tried on the Rangie yet??? with the new cooler mayber another turbo ( probably a VGT, and more boooooooost ehehehehhehehe).

Goal: 200hp!!!

For now a just like to kick Touaregs R5 asses... ;)

cheers!

100% gaurunteed at near as damn it to 200bhp
y25dt is the same engine as the 525tds 0nly on the 2001 engine the extra power must be in the engine or pump as everything else was off the rr the turbos were exactly the same size but the omega one exhausted in the wrong place so couldnt be fitted sump/oil pick-up mounts and other bits were off rr and kept a rr ecu engine cost £450 mapping cost £300 you can do a search on the omega engine and you will find that pre 2001 had the x25dt post had y25dt x was same bhp as rr and y is about 50 more i live in staffordshire if want to try it to believe it be my guest just send a pm

LOL

Men, my english sucks! But your's in a different league!!! Sorry, couldn't help my self!!! :D :D

Ok, sorry, really.

I haven't understand,at least, 70% of what you just wrote. Of the 30% that i could figure out, you said that your RR has a sourced Omega engine that is the same as the 25TDS? OK, my fault. i has pretty sure that it was the 25TD...

Now, about the 200hp. Remap, boxes, chips or whatever, will never give 45hp on a M51 engine... 25, maybe 35 if real well done!

About the engine, again my apologies. I though that the engine that you we're refering had 150cv, and although based on the BMW engine is a lot diffrent with common rail and stuff...

But i maintain my opinion.

200hp? Show me the grafhs!!!;)

If i could i will go to your place, maybe we could talk a little and exchage some info. But i live in Portugal! Which isn't that close...

cheers

Sorry guys didnt have time to keep checking this thread over christmas and new year!
Im now looking for a picture i have seen on a forum somwhere showing a modified BMW E34 diesel, now i know the guy had a tubular exhaust manifold and a slightly bigger turbo, if my memory serves me right he had dyno graphs for 213hp but it was the torque figures that were impressive! i will try and find the link and post it on here as it has a lot of info!!

typical isnt it, it drives me crazy when you find something on the internet but cant find it again! Im not giving up, might just take a bit longer than expected!

hi

any update on this?

hi i have a 96 range rover p38 dse auto . and i have fitted a re mapped chip ,hi flow air filter, 3" stainless steel twin pipe exhaust and 3 x size intercooler. this has taken the power the rangy from 136 to 205bhp. this has made the rangy more drivable and when i got it i was getting 24 mpg and now am getting 36 mpg.
in the summer i did a 2500miles towing a caravan and i got 30 mpg . the best thing that i have found is that you can go quicker without having to thrasth it. the cost for what i have done has cost £1500+vat. am now looking it to a bigger turbo

What's the exhaust like for noise now?
Any pics of the intercooler installation. Was it a customer made one or did you get the intercooler from some other vehicle?
What brand of chip / re-map?
