I am going to replace the glowplugs soon and I know while I am going to have the Intake manifold off,it will with the EGR need a good clean, as from memory a couple of years back, the thick black oily gum was caked in these parts and this time I want to clean them properly.

I have been toying with the idea of using diesel fuel, white spirit, petrol, brake cleaner nd even the neigbours dishwasher when they are out!

I did a quick google on this subject and cam across this product- what do you think?
Diesel Air Intake and EGR cleaner from JLM Lubricants

I know it will be a very messy dirty job, just want to know if anyone offer any decent advice.

Wash it in petrol. Then blow off. Keep repeating until it clean.

Acetone for the intercooler:)

Yes but not for the plastic manifold or any plastic parts. Acetone likes eating plastic. I purposely did not say Acetone for that reason, as he only mentioned cleaning EGR and manifold. Petrol is also very good for intercooler, as long as you make sure it's all out and dry before refitting.:):)

Petrol it is then, second thought was brake cleaner, but that's more expensive!
What about the intake ports on the car, bit worried about bits of this gunk falling in? Any tips?

Take a long strip of clean rag push it in one then all the others in turn. That way when you remove it you remove it all. Sometimes seperate pieces get overlooked.
