For all the faults and unreliability these things apparently have...my journey down to London, driving around in London and journey home today has been entirely without hitch or issue.

I do love the old girl!

I will second that mine has given me less grief than other motors in the eight years ive had:)

It will go and breakdown on me now ive mentioned it.

Ones days motoring isn't a large enough sample size to claim reliability! I remember reading about the worlds highest mileage car owner who explained the key to cheap and reliable motoring is reading and actioning the maintenance schedule.

This isn't the first long trip I've done in her..she's been up from London before. It was nice to drive and not be worried about anything. A good steady pace *cough* on the way home and she was completely faultless.

As for fuel...about £100 each way.

Well done that man, carry on carrying on.:D

Looking at train fares to get a cheap ticket for the same journey you need to book 3 months in advance and even then it will cost you £50 each way per person, then again I'm no train expert I could have got that wrong

Then again if you want to go tomorrow its £65 each way or £131 each way 1st class per person so x5 seats in the range £655 if you go 1st class.

To be honest, it would have cost less if my foot wasn't made of lead. The money is worth it for the comfort cruising though.

May end up taking it to Spain this year. Or the L322 from my other thread.

It wouldn't have been as nice on a train, were planning an around the UK trip in the summer in the p38 London to Scotland n back taking in some sights hope to have it on lpg by then

I do a weekly commute from Sheffield to London (330 miles in total). Been doing that for nearly 4 years now in the P38 & only been stranded once (at a petrol station 3 miles from home with a knackered starter motor).
They are not half as unreliable as their reputation suggests but maintenance is in another league of any previous car I've owned.

I am sure that the additional levels of technology/sophistication have a combined 'knock on' effect upon the 'reliability' issues, (on all modern vehicles), and this, in turn, adds additional importance of regular scheduled maintenance!

There is a plus side, however, as there are many 'bargains' out there due to owners/garages simply wanting to 'cut their losses' when they are faced with, (what appear to be), overly complex problems when this may not, always, be the case on every occasion - some examples being the Jaguar X Type Auto Transmission issues, (and multiple error messages), and the well documented Range Rover issues!

The addition of LPG adds, (yet another), 'management system' to vehicle electronics - but I was able to purchase a Jeep Grand Cherokee for peanuts, (three years ago), because of a fuel leak and the fact that it would not run on LPG.

The fuel leak was due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator which was over pressurising the fuel circuit and the LPG issue was due to an incorrectly programmed management system and the Jeep is still running today, (although I suspect she is a little concerned to note the recent arrival of the P38)!!
