Well my detroit locker has failed :mad:, after braking a half shaft last weekend.

Its been parked up for a week got round to putting a new shaft in today to find when I try to drive the 90 it makes some horrible noises metal on metal crunching together :mad:

Going to strip it all down now so will add pics later


If you have a ditroit get some HD half shafts

Will be ringing Ashcrofts on Monday and ordering some air lockers :D
 
How has the half shaft caused the diff to fail?

I was advised to maybe machine a small grove at the wheel end of my half shafts as a weak point,

Steve at crown told me not to run hd shafts
 
Don't run HD halfshafts. It is much easier to replace a snapped halfshaft than a fluffed diff. It is always better to have the cheapest and easiest to replace component of the drivetrain as the weakest point.

when a standard shaft snaps it shock loads the clutch in the locker or so i was told

all i know is my locker is fooked with half its teeth missing and it was down to half shaft failed :eek::mad:
 
Rover Detroits the later ones are weak Ashcroft stopped selling them as they would not warranty the problems. Thats why when ever anyone says I say make sure you have the older type.

are you interested in selling the broken diff??

Surely for one halfshaft to snap, there must have been an uneven amount of torque between the 2 halfshafts, in which case the diff would already have been fully locked up. The halfshaft snapping should have released the pressure on the diff, as the diff could then have turned and spun the unloaded wheel that caused the torque imbalance in the first place, and not shock loaded it. :confused:
 
What happens is...halfshafts twist ALOT like 360 degrees in some cases before they snap. When they snap all that energy goes back through in an instant bang and the resulting factor is all those teeth striping.


ask dave at ashcroft he should confirm that he no longer sells them for the reason you have found because they have been known to fail and destroy themselves and eaton or whoever it is now that ownes them refuses to warrant new internals.

I chose a salisbury because its a much beefier unit and cheaper.
 
I understand why it's happened now it's basically kineticly stored energy that's smashed it,

But is it not possible that this could happen to any diff?

I'm go a try get my shafts machined very soon, hopefully making a weaker point might save my diff from the same fate, shafts are cheep enough.
