Hi LZ,

I have always wanted a Defender after owning a D1 for a short time and driving a few 90/110's with work.

After reading the stolen vehicles threads I'm wondering if its worth the hassle?

How do you guys deal with this? Would basic security (Disclok + Clutch Claw) be enough, or do you really need to garage a landie to keep it as safe as possible?

Do you worry about your landie all the time?

are you intending on getting insurance? If so do it, what's the worst that can happen?

Of course it would be insured.

It seems from the posts on other topics that its pretty impossible to protect a landie, other than sitting in the back with a 12 gauge.

Guess I will go and get a new BMW, those should be impossible to steal :D

It seems all to many that get reported here stolen has absolutely no security on them. Its no wonder they get taken.

Not at all, disklok and isolation switch for out and about security then block it in at home, depending where you live add CCTV.

Guy down the road from me doesn't have any security on his 110 - but - we live in a quiet area (highest safety rating on the post code insurance database) but he's never had any problems

This is what I am wondering, there are 4 defenders in my old street that have been parked in the street for a few years with no security, 1 did get a window broken and tools nicked.

I hope its a case of making it harder to steal so they go for the easy targets.

Blocking it on my drive is not a option, but I should be able to install a post to chain it too. My street has lots of shiny new BMW's & Mini's and we are semi rural with lots of horsey people and farms about, so hopefully mine would be okay.

Recently, new Beamers have been blighted by a very serious security problem which has seen them getting lifted en masse like proverbial hotcakes. Don't know whether this has been sorted yet.

Defenders are highly sought after, they are easy to split into saleable component parts and have little inherent security. They are therefore a thief's paradise - especially if the owner gets slack.

Employ as much security as you can - defo a Disklok, and use it. All the time.

As for being worth the hassle - only you can decide. They grow on you though - bigtime!

May be the stupidest think iv heard, but.... When you say disk lock as in what's used on motorbikes? Or is this a security device iv somehow never heard of?

Let the ridiculing begin.....

There was a software quality enhancement released after the watchdog programme. All affected cars are getting it now.

Yep the BMW issue has been sorted and yes it's worth getting a Defender, mine is garaged when not in use which is a good start.

pal had his newly rebuilt 90td5 stolen a month or so back.
He had it all on cctv and was shocked how they drove off quicker than he could normally with the keys and immobilizer fob and hidden fuel valve.
The pikey firm who stole it(well known and faces on camera) found his business card and phoned him up offering to give it back for £1000.
The police got in touch a few weeks later and asked if he had found his motorbike:confused:

The BMW bit was a joke, I'm shocked at how easy scum can get away with a £40k+ car.

I will only have a budget of around £5-6k and really only want it in good mechanical condition, so if its a bit rough looking hopefully this will keep it off the steal to order lists.

I have a garage, but as its a new build house and I think it might be a bit tight getting a 110 in, though with small rims and flat/low tyres it might work. This would only be done if I was away for a while, would get bored of swapping wheels about.

I loved my old D1 and regret selling it but had to at the time, I have driven a few Defenders 90/110 + Santana's with work and had great fun with them.
