Good morning

I’ve been offered a Land Rover Defender without any paperwork, will I be able to apply for a log book ? If the Vin plate is missing can I use the number from the Chassis and engine number ?

Thank you

Wow.

No paperwork, no vin plate and your thinking of buying?

That could come back and bite you in a very bad way.

There is literally no reason not to have paperwork or vin plate. The seller can request new paperwork and vin doesn’t ever need to be removed In any normal situation.....

Walk away.

There in lies the question of where do you find a chassis that is in good condition but needs a new body?

Cheers

My VIN plate fell off.... as it corroded at the rivets when I was leaning over once it just came away.

If you can get it cheap enough then maybe breaking it for spares is the way to go.
Keep the camper conversion parts and swap them onto a good chassis, and then sell on the std body parts when removed.

Cheers

If you go for it make sure you get a receipt from the vendor stating exactly what you are buying and stating chassis / paperwork not available. Also get the receipt to include engine number and both gearboxes numbers, could even try and get some photos added to the receipt (or signed as a true likeness of what he is selling). Don't know how much it would help if you do have any issues later but at least it would prove you haven't stole the bits!

Sounds like there may 2 motors running about with the same ID
Wonder if the VIN plate has been 'accidentally' stuck to another vehicle - by mistake of course:rolleyes:
I'd be doing a bit of research first before parting with any dosh
