After taking off the front wheel inner arch I can see the suspension turrets are rusted through!
I know the previous owner had the defender.lifted.

I read a.few how to change suspension howtos and it seems I might as well change the dampers.

Question is how will I know what size I will need as its been lifted?

Also Can you recommend me what are the best buy shocks springs etc also should I get britpart galvanised turrets kit? Or should I go heavy duty turrets galv or powder coated?

Thanks for your help

Take the springs off and measure them. Compare this to standard. They should be taller if it been lifted.

You can measure between bump stops and axles, there is a chart of acceptable measurements in the LR manual. Should be pretty obvious if it is lifted.

The galv turrets are probably good, but standard last pretty well, especially if you paint them up a bit before fitting.

Personally I would go back to standard springs, then standard shocks etc. will fit! :)

I put tubular turrets on my D1 - to get away from the mud trapping proclivities of the standard design. I am sure the galv ones will last - but they will also trap mud!

Agree with this - I put new genuine springs all round, and gas dampers, all round - the ride is super duper now! Springs are cheap as chips - something like £17 each ish......

All new genuine springs and shocks on my 90 about 5 years ago, improved the ride massively! :) Although the old springs were just within tolerances when removed.

Thanks for the replies!

On a side note damaged the swan neck on my welder today fixing my dump irons. I bought a new one but am going to try running a M6 tap down it BUT I don't have one so I was going to order a set off of Amazon.

Question is do I just need a metric set or a mix for doing my bulkhead when it has been galvanised?

Do you think its worth posting pictures etc of my rebuild ( dump irons, suspension, bulkhead repair (galvanizing))?

Thanks!

I don't know what sort of motor you have got, but as far as I know, everything on Ninety/One Ten and Defenders is metric, except the UJ flange bolts, maybe brake pedal boxes on some models.

Pics are always interesting, and keep the members entertained! :)

And you may get some helpful advice and trouble shooting if you post them.

If you not sure speak to someone like gwyn lewsi, all my suspention has come from there, sells everything from full challenge to standard stuff he also does galv items, he makes it all him self, very helpfull bloke
