Got rather a bad leak on my TD5. It's never been that bad before, always leaked a little but nothing serious however recently its much worse lost over 1.5L of fluid in 2 weeks or less. Its definitely the TX box, GB is leak free.

Where could the oil be coming from?

Rang Gigglepin 4x4 they want £300 minimum to fix it- which they think is a back to back leak.

Could it be coming from the inspection plate? There doesn't appear to be any oil in/around the handbrake drum so less inclined to think its the intermediate shaft

Any other ideas?

If it is a TX box out job how difficult is it to do? Can it be done on a driveway?

If it is your inspection plate you can do it on your drive. Failing that it's probably a transfer box out job, probably about 3 hours minimum.

Have you tried taking it to a garage and just asking for a diagnosis? Usually free and at least you know what it is then before chasing a leak around and doing unnesserary work.
 
Ill check the inspection plate on the weekend. Too dark when I get home from work.

Booked in at Gigglepin for a health check so should find out then.
 
As it's well spread around it is hard to tell exactly where it is coming from. I usually clean as much of the wet stuff off with kitchen roll and then wait and see where it comes out from next. It does look to me a bit like it's escaping between the two boxes rather than just the sump plate. Yes £300 doesn't seem an unusual price these days for a garage to charge for anything that involves removing the gear box or part of it. But it isn't impossible to do it at home. When mine needs doing it'll be done at the side of the road. The transfer box is heavy to manipulate by hand whilst lying on your back so a transmission jack or engine crane taking the weight via the cab is helpful.
 
I'd clean the oil off with some brake cleaner, then drive a short road test and have a look where it is leaking from.
Looks like input seal or intermidiat shaft from the pic. Hopfully the input seal.
 
its more than likely coming from the intermediate shaft , it would need box off to slide shaft back enough to renew o ring and add silicone
 
Intermediate shaft. Cleaned it all up and had a look, zero drips engine off/standstill. Went for a short drive and it started ****ing out. Could see the shaft hole. :(

A job for Gigglepin on Tuesday. Just dont have the time/skills/space to do it myself.
