I wouldn’t worry too much, mine has been dripping transfer box oil, gear oil and engine oil for at least the 15 years I’ve owned it. They’re notorious for it, shouldn’t do it, but they mostly do! The front output seal leak, which yours looks like, is actually easy to cure with the correct seal.

Thanks that makes us feel better, we did expect leaks, just not to this extent 😅

Is this the front output seal? Previous owner gave us two of these

That is always a possibility with any used vehicle I guess.
Owning a Defender is a battle of wills and usually it wins resulting in selling it.
As you go along you will come to accept what needs sorting and what needs monitoring. General maintenance is quite high but usually sensibly priced if you are willing to get stuck in.
Remember its cheaper to have a go fixing it yourself then paying someone to **** it up.
 
So they confirmed it's the transfer box output seal which is leaking?
Corteco seals are good choice, Britpart specials are not.
Smith & Allan are pretty good for oil, bear in mind transfer box and axles use the same oil so don't bother buying 1/2 lit at Halfords (if they sell it).
Have I got the right two things here? 😁

Although everyone has their preference and at the risk of starting a lively debate below are some of my preferred parts suppliers, as you are just starting out not sure if you have found these yet. Nothing wrong with eBay but the dedicated parts suppliers usually have the ability to tell you exactly what brand of part you are getting and are usually very helpful on the phone if you are stuck or struggling.

You will also find digital copies of the workshop manual HERE. But more importantly in my opinion the parts manual. This allows you to identify the part you need and get the Land Rover part number for it. You can then search the internet very specifically to that part number.
 
Funny that was exactly what did it! The open end on the bolt with a large pipe on thw other to break mine. Think it was a 13mm was something small enough I was expecting the bolt to snap, but couldn’t access with a socket to deliberately shear the bolt!
I have a photo somewhere....in South Africa in '91 we were trying to undo a 47mm bolt on a set of discs. All the heat and persuadin' we could offer didn't budge it, so with a combination spanner the ring end went on the offending bolt and the tooth on the bucket of a JCB backhoe went into the open end. That thing was a curve under Samantha Fox's shirt before we chickened out. I don't remember whether we ended up having to cut the bastid off in the end, but I'll never forget Gedore tools. Maybe I'll see if I can dig up the photo one of these evenings.
