I'm sure this has been covered before........
But iv searched and not found the answers.
Due to knackered knee Im struggling with the heavy clutch and to be honest the driving position of my defender makes gear change a pain in the ass and knee!
It's a tidy low mileage td5 I love the car and would like to convert it to auto
In simple terms what do I need to buy to do the conversion?
Box, torque converter, transfer box (I want a diff lock), console for inside and a computer gizmo?
How hard is it fitting the box from a td5 disco?
I looked at ashcrofts and i can't afford their kit but I understand it's all pukka new parts
After talking to my mate, who distrusts td5s iv been and looked at a 300 tdi that's been converted to auto, but it's too much of a backwards step.
It was nowhere near as nice as mine.
He suggested I could look out for a tidy defender and stick a 300 and auto from a disco in, which he would be happy to do,
Any suggestions?

physically fitting the box in isnt difficult, the manual and disco auto box are the same dimensions ,nas spec defender consoles are available, you would need ashcrofts compushift or convert governor controlled box to fit td5

Cant you get Ashcrofts just to mod a box up to go hydraulic (governor control) as it would be a good idea to put a fully checked out box in at the start , also less likelyhood of gremlins later with the non ecu box .
The physical conversion is relatively straight forward , and even without the nas console you can make it quite a tidy job in the cab . I took the full discovery powertrain including EDC when I built mine . HTSH

ive done it years ago but require drilling main case for feeds to governor as well as swapping rear shaft ,valve block etcwhich requires full strip down its easier to convert a governor controlled box to fit td5, bell housing iirc but may require shaft,

Thanks the replies but I don't know what most of that means,
If I buy a box from a td5 disco, it will fit right?
Then I need a compushift?
Can I retain my transfer box?
What else do I need?

if you buy a td5 disco box you will need compushift, youd need a 300tdi disco box converted to fit td5 engine for gov control, you could use your t/box in either case

I believe it's a different spring on the pedal but I thought from 300tdi all Defenders had it. You could consider servo assisted clutch? About £400 simple fit. Supposed to be finger light! Temped myself if just for laziness lol.
