on the search for a defender (thought id keep this seperate from the on the road thread)

so il post up some links and youd be so kind you could tell me what they are like and to be avoided, over priced, or look good etc etc, would appriciate it

spotted this one, 66k, looks quite clean ? a wopping 12 months parts and labour warranty !! but not too sure on the color really

WALTON MOTORS : LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 2.5 DIESEL STATION WAGON ONLY 66000 MILES

I think colour is last thing you should be worrying about. you need to check for rust on the chassis and anywhere else and then look again. get a test drive and check again. 66k could be correct but may be a replacment speedometer. forget warranties they are not worth the paper they are written on.

Both look overpriced to be honest. I bought mine from Walton motors. The 12 month warrenty isnt from them. Its a 3rd party one that you can buy with any car for not that much. Its also a pretty basic warrenty. Walton motors made some mistakes with my car and the after sales care was pretty poor to be honest. Take your time and get a good one.

I also thought they looked expensive especially for their condition.
Personally i would avoid anything with the td engine.
Just google 19j engine problems!

Those engines are so loud, they are like canal boats. To hold a conversation at 30m.p.h you're nearly shouting. Might be an idea to look for 200 / 300 tdi models

cheers guys, the one i looked at and drove was a 300tdi, so i dont know about these engines, that was fine and no different to my discovery obviously engine noise wise as same engine

its just a case of whats within reason distance that comes up on the defender and the rr classic front

are they really that bad ? i need to drive one i think, are they "all" that bad , or just some or what ?

obviously that would be somewhat rubbish for me

i am looking, its just what comes up locally so will keep looking

that black one with winch n snorkel etc, hes talking 2k

Last one looks okay chassis looks okay near the rear crossmember
Got to be worth a look?

had a chat with him re the last one

its got a brand new mot ,not much history and tax runs out end of the month, he says chassis is excellent hasnt any problems and no rust and not even any surfece rust really

snorkel, lights, winch etc all working and functional

the 200tdi engine was fitted around 4 months ago, but they didnt fit the intercooler ? its supplied and needs to be fitted, is that a problem or suspect why he hasnt fitted it ?

he said it drives lovely and is a nice defender

he said hes had a lot of interest cant really move much on price maybe alittle/couple of hundred to the 3k mark

what do you think ?

its actualy on my way to work, so can have a look thursday when i go in, or pop up tomorrow and have a look he said hes about in the daytime

also see this thread, its same area price wise as this...

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/1988-range-rover-classic-161211.html

im litterally un decided what to do, a range rover classic or a defender, cant seem to settle on what to get, as both have their merrits

this one looks quite nice, although just the td engine ? and not sure what to make of the brown fur  , presume its been glued in and probably ruins it if so, as it wont be easily removed

this one looks nice, advertised at 4k, just had a chat about it with them, he said its lovely conditon full mot will be put on it, they sold it to a chapa year ago, whos just px`d it in for a newer one after falling in love with them, just used it for pottering about no major off roading or anything, full service histoy and lots of paper work, chassis is lovely and no major rust or anything and its structualy very solid and a nice defender, said if i was seriously intersted we could maybe get to my bracket of 3 to 3.5k

only thing is its not a tdi , wish it was !!

The 2.5NA and 2.5TD are loud, but for some it's all part of the charm. You don't really notice it much I guess. Plus it blocks out the noise of rattles :) A 2.5 without a turbo takes quite a while to get up to speed (ie it's sluggish) but we know of owners who use it as a daily driver about town and love it.

i spose i need to drive one and see what i think, i drove a 300tdi and loved the drive, didnt at all find it too noisey , drove around town and also up to 60 odd on an a road , wasnt more noisey than my disco tdi

think that green one above looks nice for 3-3.5k ?

although woud i regret it if it wasnt tdi, especialy with road/motorway driving 50 mile round trips to work in a non tdi

is it wise to look for overall condition etc over tdi essential/a tdi in lesser condition ? or make a tdi a must

constant searching now lol, this one been listed today a tdi but a 4.5 hr train journey away , why cant they be closer, any good ?

that one is a TD , but not a tdi ...so whats difference between the td and tdi , is it a lot ? both noise and performance wise ? is the td sort of in between a na and a tdi ?

the TD is basically a N/A with a turbo stuck on, wasn't one of LR's greatest acheivements  wont touch a TDi which is a different beast altogether

tdi is a much better engine than td. More power, more refined (slightly) and more reliable.

if that was closer it could be worth a look or even ask for pics of chassis, close up of bulkhead etc. cant see the seller taking 3k for it tho or it would have been priced less.

not sure about the dash top either

not an expensive part and shouldnt be too hard to sort out but would help with reducing the asking price.

ok thanks mate, he said its factorty tdi no noises or smoke and drives lovely, and already been offered 3250, but still a long way really@ 5 hrs on the train then a long drive back

just working through my mornings ebay messages

this one looks nice, but again a long treck..

Hi there, yes the chassis is 100% solid as its new and galvanised so will never rot. Everything seems to work fine, drives well, a light tiss from the trans as with any defender, nothing out of the ordinary. Sorry we dont do warranty on any of our cars especially not over 20 years old. Best cash price would be £3900, thanks TMC

looks/sounds nice, but thought a dealer offerign just £95 off the ebay price of 3995, for cash, was tight
