Yep, that's my plan :D

im doing the first one as a template and showcase, then I'll try and figure out a way of getting it done with less cutting and more folding areas, like a cardboard box, so it takes less time to put it together

iv'e been thinking about doing these for truck cabs for a while now using mdf and speaker carpet to cut down on the moisture that's created in landys due to condensation on cold metal. good job so far JP.
 
Right... todays update!

Got sheet metal my mate had laying around, surface rust but will clean well.

The sheet metal i got from him was thicker than the previous template I had done, so had to do 2 new sides, not a problem as I'll keep the other as an actual template for future consoles I may build

Had a couple of old shelfs off a computer desk, so cut a bit out of it, this will be the base for the CB/Radio shelf, the holes will be good for ventilation

then I cut and bent the metal plate that will be facing forward, this plate will have an interior light facing forward. Then there will be a plate like this facing backwards, also with a light, and at the bottom, to close the gap between the 2 plates there will be a 'lid' with switches for lights, etc...

and that's all for today... took me about 4h to do all this...
Considering I've been using disc cutter, then a file to bring it to accurate measurement and a vice with wood planks to bend the metal... its not too bad!

Nah not really mate, it looks quite big on the work bench, but its fine once in place, even with someone sitting on the middle seat.

btw... does anyone have a rivnut tool they won't mind lending? something they wont need in the near future?
I will need to one to put rivnuts on the channels over the windscreen and at the back, where the console will bolt to, but looking at prices they are bloody expensive to be used only once or twice...

cant just rivet the back 1's and bolt the front 1's?

another thing.. anyone has any idea for interior lights? need to find something that will fit on that plate, but not sure what, maybe off a transit van or something like that.
probably best bet is to go to a scrapyard and get a couple of lights i guess..

the ones in a sprinter are very good they have a map reading setting as well ;)
on that rivnut thing cant rivet and bolt bracets on and bolt and wing nut or those nobs like the ones holding the fuse cover on the fender work?
 
nah, no room for brackets, its hard to explain, but if you look at the pics above, you'll see that at each end of the console, there is a smaller square bit sticking out? this is the same width as the channels above the windscreen and back, then I'll have a plate from one side to the other of the console sides, with a bit sticking wider than the console, this plate will sit flush against the channels and the bolts will go through the bits sticking wider and to a rivnut that will be put in the channel...
 
nah... would have to drill loads of little holes for it, too much hassle.

will keep with just a standard interior light, nice idea though
 
right... todays update, can't do anymore as its fokin freezing in the garage...

anyway, today I done the back and front plate... not much, but folding with vice, hammer and wood takes ages..not to mention cutting with disc cutter and then filing it.

if I had a cutting and folding machine, this would have been done by now, as I'm doing it i realise more how easy it is do...

Lookin' good! Glad i stumbled across this thread- been thinking about one meself, but lack of funds/skills prevent it so far. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

im pleased with it, but as im doing it I keep thinking on different designs and how I could have done it different... but now its too late to go back.

However, I might be investing on a metal folder, guilotine and roller....so then I can really use my imagination on future models
 
and todays update!!

cleaned up the metal and spot welded everything.

Still have to
cut the plate for the bottom cover between the plates where front and rear interior light will go
weld brackets with nuts on those 2 plates so the bottom plate can screw into it
cut the holes for the interior lights
cut metal sheet for top cover

weld it properly

Its looking good, but would look so much better if I had a sheet metal cutter and folder!

anywhoooo... just out of interested, I know that the one in the first post is £280 which is a ridiculous price, but how much would people be willing to pay for something like this?
 
Depends on lots of things
I.e Painted, Carpet Covered, Etc
Build quality :p

I reckon somewhere around £100 + P+P is reasonable
