Not sure where you're based but why dont you head over to the 4x4 show in a couple of weekends time. Might give you a chance to see the options up close.

All Wheel Drive Show and auto Jumble

I dont really know anything about Landcruisers, so cant really help with your comparision.

I would say though that Defenders aren't quick, normal motorway speeds is flat out for my 90 (quite comfy at 60-65 though). Also, I would say its juicy in comparision to a normal car (but no idea about the mpg of the landcruiser, so can't help compare there).

But its fecking brilliant in all other respects. It has been amazingly reliable, even through that harsh winter we just had. It has no problems whatsoever with driving through deep water or rough terrain or snow. I love driving it. And I probably spend quite a lot of my time thinking about what modifications I want to make next or what accessories I want to buy for it (because the options are endless). It really is the ultimate vehicle in most respects.

As others have said, you do need to give them a little bit of TLC. People do seem to neglect them quite a lot, it seems. I think that's because they are so rugged and reliable in general, that people tend to think they can just leave them and not look after them in the same way you'd need to look after a car. But that said, even if you do get one that's not been looked after, they are really simple vehicles and easy to work on. Parts are cheap and readily available. Most jobs I'd gladly do myself, rather than take to a garage.

Yeah, I'd pick the defender I think.

Oh, and you do need to take security quite seriously.

Id suggest you try and get a test drive in defender and a landcruiser. They are at completely diferent ends of the 4x4 spectrum. I certainly wouldnt want to doing many motorway miles in a defender but then i wouldnt want to go pay and play in a landcruiser. Horses for courses.

I think I will go for the defender and if one crops up near the time I want to get one at the right price then I think it will be a no brainer (if condition and drive is good)
thanks for the help guys, like people say if its fine when I buy it and I look after it and give it a good service every now and again, It should be a top 4x4.

true true will also make sure I drive ones out the price range just to make sure the ones in the price range should be about the same

My wife had a Nissan Terrano for 8 years and we hardly touched it it was the last 18 months that things started to niggle and then the price of parts were bonkers we had to have a jet put in the fuel delivery system it cost 500 to re jet or 2000 for recon unit and Jap parts are not as cheap or readily available as Landy but interior wise and driving it was like ****e off a shovel compared to my Disco.
And as stated earlier my R reg disco 300 tdi 1998 engine has done 202000 miles and is as sweet as a nut,(this is asking for trouble) it doesn't even smoke not a puff when I start it let alone under drive, BUT it has 28 six monthly stamps in the service book from land\rover dealer ( I just bought it) and is my third disco and I do agree that half the bad press for land rover is the fact that these disco / fenders generally get a bollocking off road and not just tarmac all it's life so it's not surprising they develop more faults.
My policy is pre maintenence rather than wait for things to fall off or break, ''a stitchin time''
So if you want a defender I wouldn't be scared of the rep just try and get a good one and then maintain it.
Or get a Jap and drive it for years until something goes and then it will probably cost you the price of the vehicle to fix........

landcruiser with 4.2 or 4.5 diesel powerfull engine , but can get thru fuel pretty quick esp at speed. I did a fast trip in OZ pulling approx 1 ton trailer . mpg 12 . usual average about the 20 mark. They are high maintenance vehicle if you service them to toyota schedule, and expensive for parts. The gearboxes were weak in 5th gear . The defender is cheaper to run all round, and will beat it by miles in mpg . Parts are cheaper, and they will cover high mileage reliably if serviced . The l/c is more a discovery type vehicle , they dont bring the defender type to UK afaik . HTSH
