OK so l know this is a common issue, and when l go over something like a cats eye at speed in my Defender 110, the front wheel that hits it will be felt to bounce three or four times.

It also seems worse if l hit a bump mid corner.

I checked the steering damper and that's fine. The wheels are brand new Boost alloys with new tyres (it did it with the old wheels too) so the wheels are OK.

I am running 32/38 f/r tyre pressures which are lower than recommended, as the ride is less harsh. Could it be the low tyre pressures?

The Defender is a 2005 and has only done 57,000 miles and has seen little if any off road abuse.

Otherwise l am left with steering swivels and dampers as the next likely culprits.

Any thoughts? Is there an easy way to check if the steering swivels need re shimming? I read that you can jack the wheel up and feel for any play at the top of the wheel.

New front shocks it is then.

I'll order some tomorrow from my local Land Rover dealer. It can't be a bad thing to change them anyway after nine years.

I've just been out and sprayed WD40 on the top and bottom mounts, to give me some chance of getting the nuts off.
 
You'll probably have to cut the nuts off, unless you are very lucky. The bottoms are a bit awkward to get at, I just drilled a hole in the nut and split it with a chisel - you'll be replacing them anyway.
 
easy to make a shock clamp tool.

just use the correct size exhaust clamp and a chunky screwdriver - or a lump of steel with2 holes in it to match the clamp bolt pitch :).
 
Mole grips and an impact gun and mine came off easy on my 92 200tdi.

Make sure you get new turret rings tho, no matter how careful you are one of the bolts will snap off!

Just watch the top nuts if you cut them off, as mine were pressurised and flew across my shed and dented the wing!
 
why not put some upgraded shocks on? They may well be cheaper than genuine dampers!

I just fitted terrafirma big bores all round and the difference is amazing
 
oh if your doing the front, why not do the back at the same time? they will probably be shagged as well.
 
There's no need to take the turrets off just use a pry bar to pop the spring out of the seat and push the axle down with your foot to pull the shock out from the spring - keep an eye on the brake lines though obviously. It's how I did mine. Saves money and messing around with turret rings.
